Leadership is Okay, Needs More Transparency

It's a decent place for a Software Engineer, but leadership transparency is a real issue.


Pros

I really liked my team; everyone's super collaborative. The core product, our chat API, is genuinely cool technology to work on. They're also pretty flexible with the hybrid model in the Amsterdam office.


Cons

Leadership communication feels really top-down, and it's tough to get clear answers on company direction. This impacts overall morale and sometimes makes project planning tricky for backend development roles. Feels like decisions are made behind closed doors.


Advice to Management

Try to be more open about strategic decisions. Regular, candid Q&A sessions would help a lot with engineering teams understanding the bigger picture.

Pros: The projects at Stream are genuinely interesting, especially if you're into the digital media and streaming tech space. I learned a lot about campaign execution and market analysis. The team I worked with was collaborative and always willing to share knowledge. The hybrid work model here in the NYC area also offered a decent amount of flexibility which was appreciated.
Cons: While there's opportunity to grow, the actual career ladder isn't always clear. Sometimes it feels like roles and responsibilities can shift without much formal planning, which can be a bit disorienting. Also, leadership communication about long-term company strategy could be more consistent to help align everyone's efforts.

Cons: While collaboration on technical tasks is good, cross-departmental communication could be smoother. Sometimes, project requirements or priorities aren't crystal clear, leading to rework. Benefits are standard, but don't quite match some of the top tech companies offering more comprehensive packages. The pace can feel a bit inconsistent.

Flexible Remote Work with Intense Moderation Role
Pros: The main draw here is definitely the work flexibility. Being able to work remotely from anywhere in the UK was a huge plus. The team environment was collaborative, and you felt like you were part of a supportive unit tackling important tasks in the digital media industry.
Cons: The volume of content to review could be overwhelming at times, leading to burnout. There were also instances where communication about policy changes wasn't as clear or timely as it could have been, making moderation tasks more difficult.
