We are seeking an experienced Operations Superintendent (Bulk) to oversee the day-to-day commercial operations of a fleet of dry bulk vessels. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of voyages while maintaining strong relationships with owners, charterers, agents, terminals, and other stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in commercial vessel operations, voyage management, charter party execution, and performance monitoring within the dry bulk shipping industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day commercial operations of a fleet of dry bulk vessels engaged on voyage charter, time charter, and Contracts of Affreightment (COA)
- Ensure smooth voyage execution by coordinating with Masters, charterers, owners, agents, terminals, cargo interests, and other stakeholders
- Plan and execute bunkering operations, cargo documentation, customs documentation, freight invoicing, stowage plans, and voyage-related documentation
- Monitor vessel performance against charter party requirements, including speed, fuel consumption, port turnaround, and operational efficiency
- Identify operational issues or vessel underperformance and implement corrective actions to minimize delays and optimize voyage profitability
- Prepare voyage estimates, voyage analysis, and post-voyage performance reports
- Manage cargo operations and mitigate operational risks associated with challenging cargoes, ports, weather conditions, and trading areas
- Maintain strong working relationships with customers, charterers, brokers, owners, terminals, agents, and cargo receivers to ensure high service standards
- Work closely with internal departments including Chartering, Technical, Finance, Claims, and HSEQ to ensure seamless operational support
- Prepare weekly and monthly operational reports, management reports, and market intelligence reports
- Support shipping asset management, restructuring projects, and reporting requirements for financial institutions where applicable
- Contribute to process improvements and operational efficiencies while ensuring compliance with company procedures and industry regulations
Requirements
- Degree in Maritime Studies, Nautical Studies, Marine Engineering, Shipping, Logistics, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial vessel operations within the dry bulk shipping industry.
- Strong understanding of voyage charter, time charter, COA operations, charter party terms, laytime, and demurrage.
- Experience in voyage planning, bunkering, freight calculations, cargo documentation, and voyage performance analysis.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work across multicultural teams.
- Commercial mindset with strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and shipping systems (e.g. IMOS or equivalent).
- Master Mariner Certificate of Competency is a mandate.
- Exposure to tanker, PCTC, or LPG operations is advantageous but not essential.
