Good Flexibility for Research, Not Always Consistent
Pros: As a Research Assistant, I found hybrid work was often an option, which is great for higher education roles. You can usually work from home a couple of days a week, making the commute to the Sydney campus easier and helping my work-life balance.
Cons: Work flexibility really varies by department and your direct supervisor in this large university environment. Some teams are still pretty strict on onsite requirements, and the official WFH policies aren't always consistent across all academic staff.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize work-from-home and hybrid policies across all departments, especially for those in university research. This would really help with employee morale and reduce uncertainty.

Solid Flexibility for Academics, Needs Work Elsewhere
Pros: I've had pretty good hybrid work options, which is great for a Research Assistant. Many days I can work from home on grant applications or data analysis. It really helps manage my personal life, especially not having to commute to the Sydney campus daily.
Cons: Some weeks, you still need to be onsite a lot for lab work or departmental meetings. It feels like the flexibility isn't consistent across all departments. If you're not in an academic role, it can be much tougher to get WFH days.
Advice to Management: UNSW leadership should standardize hybrid work policies across the university. Make it clearer for all staff, not just academics, what their work-from-home options are.

Decent benefits, pay could be better
Pros: The superannuation is solid, definitely above average, which is a big plus for long-term planning. You get good annual leave and sick leave too, which helps for work-life balance in Sydney. It's pretty stable working for a large university.
Cons: As a research assistant, the base salary felt a bit low for the cost of living in Sydney. Pay raises are usually pretty standard, and there isn't much wiggle room to negotiate your starting salary in academic roles. Sometimes it feels like they expect you to accept less because it's the university sector.
Advice to Management: Try to make salaries, especially for junior academic roles like research assistants, more competitive with the broader job market. It'd help attract better talent to the university sector.
