Leadership Can Be Hit Or Miss
Pros: It's great working with really smart people, especially in the core open source engineering teams. The WFH flexibility is solid, which helps with my work-life balance. Red Hat's culture around contributing to the wider Linux and cloud computing communities is genuinely strong, which I appreciated as a Senior Software Engineer.
Cons: Upper management often feels a bit disconnected; there isn't always clear direction on new initiatives for enterprise software. Middle management can be inconsistent too; some managers are fantastic, others struggle with delegation and advocating for their teams. This makes career growth harder to navigate sometimes.
Advice to Management: Focus on better communication from the top down and invest more in management training, especially for new team leads. Give teams clearer long-term roadmaps for enterprise software development.

Leadership is Okay, But IBM Influence Shows
Pros: I really like the focus on open source software; it's genuinely part of Red Hat's DNA. My direct manager is solid and supports remote work flexibility. We also get decent benefits and competitive pay for enterprise Linux roles.
Cons: Upper management decisions often feel slow and bogged down by corporate processes, likely due to IBM's influence. It's tough to get clear direction on long-term product strategy sometimes. There's not always a clear path for career growth beyond senior individual contributor tracks.
Advice to Management: Try to communicate strategic decisions more clearly to engineering teams. Give team leads more autonomy to make quick calls without layers of approval. Keep the open source ethos strong at all levels of management.

Open Culture, But IBM Influence Is Showing
Pros: The open source philosophy is still strong here. Everyone is pretty collaborative, which is great for a Solutions Architect role. I've had good work flexibility, working remote from Texas often.
Cons: Since the IBM acquisition, there's more bureaucracy creeping in. Decision-making feels slower, and some of that classic Red Hat company culture is getting diluted. It's a big tech company now.
Advice to Management: Don't lose sight of what made Red Hat special before the acquisition. Keep that collaborative, community feel alive for us technical people.
