Solid hybrid work options for engineers

Working at AVEVA was pretty decent, especially with their approach to work flexibility. As a Software Engineer, I found the hybrid model really helped my personal life and overall work-life balance.

Pros

The hybrid model is a big plus here. You've got options to work from home a few days a week, which is great for work-life balance in the Houston, TX area. They're generally flexible for technical roles, especially for those working on industrial automation software.

Cons

Sometimes it felt like different teams had their own interpretations of the hybrid policy, so consistency wasn't always there. Career growth for a Software Engineer felt a bit slow if you weren't actively pushing for it.

Advice to Management

Standardize the hybrid work policy across all teams. It'd make things clearer for everyone and ensure fairness.

Decent Benefits, Pay Could Be Better
Pros: The health insurance is pretty good, and the 401k match is decent. They also offer some nice perks for parental leave, which is a plus for families. As a Software Engineer, the benefit package overall is fairly robust within the industrial software sector.
Cons: Base pay for a Software Engineer here feels a bit low for the Houston, TX market, especially compared to other large tech companies. There isn't much room for salary negotiation either. Raises aren't huge, making it tough to keep up with inflation.
Advice to Management: Review the compensation strategy for technical roles, especially Software Engineers. Being more competitive with base salaries will help attract and retain top talent in the industrial software sector.

Job Security Feels Just Okay Lately
Pros: The core business in industrial automation software is pretty stable. If you're working on key legacy products as a Software Engineer, especially out of the Houston office, your role feels fairly secure. There's definitely a long-standing customer base.
Cons: The company undergoes a lot of reorganizations, especially after acquisitions. This can make job security uncertain for some teams. They've shifted focus quite a bit in the digital transformation space, which means some projects get dropped fast. It's a large corporate environment, so sometimes you just feel like a number.
Advice to Management: Try to communicate future plans and potential team changes more transparently. The constant shifts create a lot of uncertainty for employees in a large corporate environment. Clearer direction on the digital transformation strategy would help.

Leadership Is a Mixed Bag, Good for Engineers
Pros: Some of the direct managers are really supportive and help you grow as a developer. The technical leadership in our specific industrial software group is also very solid. You get to work on cool engineering projects.
Cons: Upper leadership in this big corporate company feels pretty distant from the daily grind. Strategic direction often changes with little warning, which is frustrating for project planning. Communication from the top can be unclear.
Advice to Management: Try to bridge the gap between corporate leadership and the engineering teams. More transparency on strategic shifts would really help morale and project stability. Get closer to what's happening on the ground.
