As the Early Days in Custody Nurse (Adult) your responsibilities will include ensuring patients have medical plans of care, assessing patients and carrying out relevant clinical investigations during their arrival, along with arranging follow-up appointments for them whilst offering advice and giving information. You must be able to clinically evaluate and ensure the safe transfer of patients to acute hospitals if needed, as well as ensuring that plans of care are understood by the patient and the prison as appropriate. You will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in clinical decision making. As part of your role you will support in undertaking audits and governance. You will provide healthcare to patients on site in the healthcare unit and locations across the prison. This will include some emergency care such as suturing, providing emergency response to undertaking dressings and performing a primary care function. There is a focus on health promotion and keeping the patients within the prison, safe and well by providing effective safe care. You will lead a team of healthcare practitioners some in specialist roles to deliver an effective safe medical service within the prison. You will contribute to our healthcare strategy and vision to; Provide outstanding evidence based care to our patients, seeking out, listening to and acting on their feedback, so that care is personalised and informed by what matters to them. Clinical The reception, diagnosis and emergency treatment of patients presenting to the adult Emergency Department. The successful candidate will be given supervision and support from senior medical staff to develop competency in the autonomous clinical management of these patients whilst ensuring patient safety. This post is based in the adult Emergency Department and no sessions will be undertaken in the paediatric Emergency Department. There is close liaison between ED and ICU at BRI. Patients referred to Specialist Units within the hospital are the responsibility of that specialist team, who will see the patient in the Emergency Department and arrange appropriate care. However, medical and nursing staff in the ED are responsible for any emergency care necessary. This shared care is seamless and collaborative. Managerial The management responsibility of the post holder will be to the Clinical Director who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board. Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation, including audit. Clinical audit is established at the BRI. They will participate in at least one supervised audit project during the 12 month post and will be encouraged to attend interdisciplinary clinical governance meetings On-Call Commitment In ED the roster is a full shift system. Shifts are a balanced mix of earlies, mids, lates, and nights. The posts pay will be calculated by HR and will be compliant with the new regulations set in Aug 2017.

This exciting, innovative, and successful post has been established to develop the career of a clinician who has completed internal medicine/core medical training with an interest in medical education and clinical research within infectious diseases, microbiology, and virology.

Working closely with clinical teams, the post holder’s main duty is to coordinate, participate, and further develop the established UCL Medical School (UCLMS) undergraduate clinical teaching programme in the Department for Infection within the divisions of Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, and Virology (50% time). It is anticipated that the post holder will wish to study for a Certificate in Medical Education and the postholder will be given departmental funding support to do this. The post holder will also be expected to obtain Good Clinical Practice certificate and to recruit and consent patients to ongoing clinical trials within the department under consultant supervision. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the registrar on call rota within infectious diseases and microbiology. The post is based at the Royal Free, Hampstead, London, is full time, and is available for 12 months from 1st August 2024. The first 6 months will be spent as the education and research fellow, and during the second 6 months (from Feb 2025) there may be the opportunity to switch role to clinical fellow in infectious diseases and microbiology to gain experience in these areas.
