Leadership is okay, some good, some bad.
Pros: Senior leadership means well and has a clear vision for our fintech products. They often try to be transparent about company direction and strategy. There's a real focus on customer impact for anyone working on money transfer solutions.
Cons: Middle management can be a mixed bag in terms of support and guidance. Communication sometimes misses the mark, especially for us remote Software Engineers. Decisions can feel a bit top-down and sudden, without much context for the 'why'.
Advice to Management: Invest more in training and empowering middle managers across the board. Ensure consistent and clear communication, especially for remote teams, so everyone feels aligned and informed about strategic shifts. Transparency is good, but context helps.

Hybrid model has its good and bad points.
Pros: I've gotta say, the remote options are pretty good for a big tech company. As a Software Engineer, I can work from home often. It helps balance personal life, especially living in Seattle.
Cons: It's not always consistent, though. Some managers really push for more in-office days, which can mess up your schedule. The 'hybrid' setup sometimes feels more like 'mostly in-office' depending on your team in this fintech industry.
Advice to Management: Just make sure the hybrid policy is truly consistent. Don't let individual team leads enforce stricter attendance than the company states.

Leadership is hit or miss, depends on your team
Pros: I liked the direct team leadership; my immediate manager was supportive and we had solid project leads. The remote work flexibility is a big plus here, makes it easy to manage personal life.
Cons: Upper leadership in this fintech company often lacked clear direction, which made planning tough. There's been a lot of turnover in director-level roles, which can make it hard to get consistent vision for long-term projects.
Advice to Management: Work on consistent messaging from the top and try to stabilize leadership roles. Clearer strategy would really help the engineering teams.

Okay Balance, But Can Get Hectic
Pros: I've been working remote from home as a Software Engineer, and that flexibility is a big plus. It's nice not commuting. Generally, folks respect your personal time when things aren't urgent.
Cons: But in the fintech industry, project deadlines can hit hard. There are definitely times I felt pushed to work late hours. It's tough to truly disconnect during those sprints.
Advice to Management: Try to even out the workload more across engineering teams. Better project planning would really help us avoid those intense crunch times. It would boost morale.

Pay is okay, but benefits could be better
Pros: The base salary as a Software Engineer is competitive for a mid-size fintech company, which is good. I also appreciated the solid 401k match, which helps with long-term savings.
Cons: The biggest downside is the health insurance premiums; they're really high, which eats into your take-home pay. Also, raises weren't super frequent for remote employees, making it tough to keep up.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into better health plan options or subsidize premiums more. Also, more regular and transparent compensation reviews would help with retention.

Remote Life at Remitly: It's a Mix
Pros: The remote setup is a huge plus; I've saved so much time without a commute in the Seattle area. As a Software Engineer, I get a decent amount of flexibility to handle personal stuff during the day. It's good that Remitly allows this WFH structure for its tech roles.
Cons: But that flexibility can be a double-edged sword. It's easy to blur lines when you're always connected, especially with the demands of fintech and cross-border payments. There are definitely times I've worked well past 5 PM to hit deadlines, so it's not always a true 40-hour week.
Advice to Management: Management needs to actively encourage breaks and 'log off' times for remote teams. Set clearer expectations on workload for engineering roles to prevent burnout, especially around critical cross-border payments cycles.

Work-Life Balance Is Decent, Can Improve
Pros: They offer some flexibility, which is nice. I appreciate the hybrid model and being able to work from home a couple days a week; it helps with personal stuff.
Cons: Project deadlines can be super tight, especially for a global fintech company. It's common to put in extra hours, and it's tough to truly disconnect in the Seattle, WA office sometimes.
Advice to Management: Management should really look at more realistic project timelines to help prevent burnout. Encourage teams to truly log off and disconnect.
