Manufacturing Technician

Okay for Manufacturing, Not Much Flexibility
Pros: For an onsite role in medical device manufacturing, the job security is good. The shifts are pretty predictable, so you know what you're getting. They also have decent benefits for corporate employees.
Cons: Work flexibility isn't really a thing for Manufacturing Technician roles. There's no remote work option, obviously, and even shift changes are tough to get. You're locked into your schedule, which can be hard sometimes.
Advice to Management: Maybe look into more internal mobility programs for Manufacturing Technicians. Also, understanding that even onsite roles could use a little more flexibility where possible, even if it's just swapping shifts more easily.

R&D Engineer

Hybrid model works, but could be better
Pros: The hybrid setup for my R&D Engineer role is a decent step. It's good to have a couple of work-from-home days each week. For a big corporate company, this level of work flexibility is okay.
Cons: It's often a pretty strict 3 days in office. That doesn't feel very "flexible" at all. Changing your in-office days can be tough sometimes. Other medical device industry companies offer more true flexibility.
Advice to Management: Offer more genuine work flexibility, not just a mandated hybrid schedule. Trust employees to manage their time and projects. It would really boost morale across the company.

Okay flexibility, but depends on your manager
Pros: As a Product Specialist, I sometimes had good control over my field schedule. There are decent hybrid options for some teams, which is a plus in the eyecare industry. It wasn't always rigid 9-5.
Cons: Official Alcon policies for the Fort Worth office can feel really strict for hybrid roles. True work from home is tough to get unless your role is specifically designed for it. Flexibility often came down to your specific manager, not a consistent company-wide standard.
Advice to Management: Standardize hybrid policies across departments. Empower managers to offer true flexibility when possible for roles not requiring constant onsite presence. Acknowledge different needs within the eyecare industry.

Regulatory Affairs Specialist

Hybrid model is okay, but not truly flexible
Pros: I appreciated the hybrid work schedule, generally 3 days in the Fort Worth, TX office and 2 remote. It's nice to avoid the daily commute, especially as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist. The company's benefits package is pretty decent too.
Cons: The work flexibility isn't as advertised; it's more of a mandated hybrid rather than true choice. Some teams, especially in the medical device industry, have less autonomy than others, making last-minute WFH tough. It feels a bit corporate sometimes.
Advice to Management: Offer more genuine flexibility for hybrid roles. Empower team leads to make decisions about their team's specific work arrangements rather than a top-down mandate for all roles in the medical device sector.
