About The Role
Parallels has an immediate opening for a Principal Backend Developer. We are seeking an experienced professional to help us revolutionize the future of work through advanced backend systems and cloud architecture. As a Principal Backend Developer, you will lead the architectural vision and technical strategy for our core systems, acting as the technical authority within a team of 7-8 engineers. Your role will involve high-level design, cloud application architecture, and defining system boundaries to ensure scalability, security, and resilience. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence critical systems, implement innovative solutions, and drive architectural excellence across the organization.
In this role, you will be responsible for writing complex, critical system code, defining technical strategies, and evaluating tools and technologies to optimize performance. You will architect secure, scalable integration patterns, establish best practices for third-party communication, and oversee system audits to refine microservice architecture. Additionally, you will design robust APIs, take ownership of cloud infrastructure strategies, and serve as a technical cornerstone to ensure adherence to standards and best practices. Collaboration with engineering leadership to drive complex architectural transitions and foster technical excellence is a key aspect of this role.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in backend development with a proven track record in principal or architect roles.
- Deep expertise in Python and the backend ecosystem, including Django, FastAPI, RabbitMQ, Celery, Kafka, PostgreSQL, and Redis.
- Strong architectural skills in refactoring complex, distributed systems, with knowledge of Hexagonal architecture, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and Clean Architecture.
- Experience implementing enterprise identity management solutions, including SCIM provisioning, OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and SAML.
- Proficiency in designing client APIs and understanding full API schema design.
- Solid understanding of cloud architecture, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Ability to influence engineering practices, drive technical consensus, and lead architectural transitions across multiple teams.
- Knowledge of strict system boundaries, TDD contracts, and AI-safe system design principles.
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum environments.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain complex, critical system mechanisms, ensuring high availability and performance.
- Define and implement the technical strategy, including tech stack choices and code organization across repositories.
- Make critical build-vs-buy decisions and evaluate internal versus third-party tools and solutions.
- Architect secure, scalable integration patterns, establishing best practices for third-party communication, identity management, and authentication protocols.
- Redefine system architecture by auditing existing microservices and implementing bounded contexts to improve modularity and maintainability.
- Design and own robust, scalable APIs, ensuring they meet performance and security standards.
- Lead cloud architecture strategy with a focus on resilience, fault tolerance, and system performance.
- Partner with engineering leadership to establish and enforce technical standards and best practices.
- Drive architectural transitions and complex system refactoring initiatives across engineering teams.
- Implement system boundaries and TDD contracts to facilitate AI-driven code generation without compromising quality.
- Mentor team members and promote best engineering practices within the organization.
