About The Role
Parallels has an immediate opening for a Principal Backend Developer. We are seeking an experienced professional to lead the architectural vision and technical strategy for our core systems. In this role, you will act as the technical authority for a team of 7-8 engineers, focusing on high-level system design, cloud application architecture, and defining system boundaries. Your expertise will help shape the future of our products by architecting secure, scalable, and resilient backend solutions that support our mission to redefine productivity tools worldwide.
As a Principal Backend Developer, you will be responsible for writing complex, critical system code, making strategic technical decisions, and establishing best practices across teams. You will lead efforts to optimize microservice architectures, implement robust APIs, and drive architectural transitions that align with our business goals. Your leadership will ensure our systems are secure, scalable, and maintainable, while fostering a culture of technical excellence within the engineering team.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in backend development with a proven track record in principal or architect-level roles
- Deep expertise in Python and the backend ecosystem, including Django, FastAPI, RabbitMQ, Celery, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Redis, etc.
- Strong architectural skills in refactoring complex systems, dependency management, and selecting appropriate architectural patterns such as Hexagonal Architecture, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and Clean Architecture
- Experience implementing identity management solutions, including SCIM provisioning, OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and SAML
- Proficiency in designing client APIs and understanding full API schema development
- Solid understanding of cloud architecture, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines
- Ability to influence engineering practices, drive technical consensus, and lead architectural transitions across multiple teams
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum methodologies
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain complex, critical system mechanisms, ensuring high performance and reliability
- Define and execute the technical strategy, including technology stack choices and code organization across repositories
- Make strategic build-vs-buy decisions, evaluating internal versus third-party tools and services
- Architect secure, scalable integration patterns for third-party communication, identity management, and authentication protocols
- Audit and redesign existing microservices, establishing strict bounded contexts and improving system modularity
- Design robust, scalable APIs, ensuring adherence to best practices and standards
- Lead the cloud architecture strategy, focusing on backend resilience, fault tolerance, and system performance
- Partner with engineering leadership to set and enforce technical standards and best practices
- Guide the team through complex architectural transitions and refactoring initiatives
- Build architectural skeletons and interfaces compatible with AI-driven code generation and automation tools
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence within the team
