About The Role
We are seeking a talented and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Session Replay squad, a team dedicated to developing a new product within Grafana Cloud. This product aims to enable our customers to understand precisely what users experienced during incidents or issues. The Session Replay tool connects frontend signals such as errors, performance metrics, and synthetic checks to session-level evidence, facilitating faster and more confident troubleshooting of production problems. As part of this team, you will work at the intersection of frontend observability, backend data processing, privacy, and performance optimization at scale. Your role involves shaping the backend architecture, including migrating towards columnar/analytical storage solutions for high-volume session data, designing data models, ingestion pipelines, and investigation workflows. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across Grafana to create cohesive, integrated experiences that enhance our observability offerings. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of session replay technology, ensuring it meets the needs of engineers and organizations worldwide.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in software development, particularly in backend services and APIs using Go or similar languages
- Strong understanding of data-intensive systems, including data ingestion, storage, querying, and cost trade-offs
- Experience designing and implementing large-scale data storage solutions, especially columnar/analytical databases
- Familiarity with object storage solutions such as S3, GCS, or Azure Blob Storage
- Knowledge of relational databases like MySQL
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment, managing ambiguity and ownership of features
- Understanding of user-centered software development processes and delivering maximum value to users
- Experience with observability tools such as Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, or Sentry (bonus)
- Experience building debugging or developer-focused tools (bonus)
- Familiarity with privacy, security, and access control considerations in data-heavy systems (bonus)
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end technical direction for the Session Replay product, spanning frontend, backend, and data systems
- Drive the evolution of backend architecture, focusing on scalable, efficient data storage solutions, including columnar/analytical data stores
- Design data models, ingestion pipelines, and query patterns to support high-volume session data
- Lead the development of investigation workflows, integrating replay data with logs, metrics, traces, and other telemetry sources within Grafana Cloud
- Make high-leverage architectural decisions that impact multiple teams and products, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across Grafana to develop cohesive and integrated observability experiences
- Enhance engineering standards, patterns, and operational practices within the team to promote maintainability and automation
- Mentor engineers, fostering technical growth and leadership within the team
