We are seeking to employ a technically skilled MS SQL database administrator to be responsible for developing, maintaining and optimizing SQL databases, as well as translating business requirements into effective technical solutions. This position involves comprehensive oversight of the SQL database environment, including its design, clustering, maintenance and upgrades, while collaborating with other technical teams and developers to support the optimal functioning of AVBOB systems.
As a Senior SQL Database Analyst you will ensure the end-to-end operational stability, performance, security and lifecycle management of the organization?s Microsoft SQL Server estate. Focused on operations, this role is accountable for maintaining high availability, recoverability, performance optimization and governance across production and disaster recovery SQL environments.

Your Responsibilities Will Include The Following
- Carry out daily SQL maintenance tasks to guarantee high availability, sufficient capacity, and optimal performance of database systems.
- Manage and regulate access permissions and privileges to maintain security and compliance.
- Develop, manage, and test backup and recovery plans in collaboration with the backup team.
- Ensure the proper functioning of storage and archiving procedures.
- Collaborate closely with IT project managers, database developers, and software developers.
- Maintain regular communication with technical, application, and operational staff to uphold database integrity and security.
- Oversee the commissioning and implementation of new applications and the customisation of existing systems to ensure all solutions are fit for purpose.
System Availability and Maintenance
- Ensure AVBOB system availability by performing maintenance and providing support within your area of responsibility.
- Keep the SQL environment aligned with AVBOB version standards (N ? 1) for all software modules, infrastructure firmware, and application versions, or provide evidence of compliance or an approved reason for non-compliance.
- Deliver SQL-related project requirements on time and without supervision, working collaboratively with other teams to ensure efficient completion of tasks.
- Efficiently manage daily operations by responding to logged calls and addressing incidents within your area of responsibility.
- Implement new databases following established design specifications, ensuring correct installation of the database management system (DBMS).
- Develop and maintain processes to support database effectiveness, including user access management, performance monitoring, regular backups, replication strategies, and timely patching.
- Oversee incident management to ensure timely resolution, escalating performance, security, and availability concerns as necessary, and working with database vendors to resolve complex issues.
- Design, build, and manage database structures for client applications, maintain data recovery, ensure database availability, uphold data integrity, and meet performance and capacity planning standards.
Documentation and Infrastructure Management
- Ensure that architecture documentation, configuration details, and setup materials approved by the Infrastructure Manager are readily available in designated shared folders for your area of responsibility
- Maintain up-to-date roadmap documentation for your area, ensuring it accurately reflects all infrastructure, including end-of-life and end-of-support dates, future recommendations and any other relevant information required for informed strategic decisions regarding technology changes
- Provide detailed reporting on a daily, weekly and monthly basis as required by the business, ensuring all reports are prepared to a high standard and presented professionally
- Conduct research into emerging trends, functionalities and architectures relevant to the DBMS
- Update maintenance plans and documentation at least quarterly or following significant changes
- Continuously enhance database support processes
- Plan and execute DBMS upgrades
- Support the development of the roadmap for future DBMS enhancements
Governance and Compliance
- Document, implement and enforce policies and relevant procedures to ensure compliance within your area of responsibility.
- Ensure governance policies are current, signed off by ICT management and presented to the IT Services Lead as part of governance deliverables. Align with the agreed team framework
- Ensure all basic Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for your responsibilities are in place and correspond with policy areas
- Plan and renew maintenance for products within your portfolio on time, before expiry
- Prepare database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
Relationship Management and Collaboration
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external clients, as well as members of other ICT streams
- Provide consistent feedback on issues, whether individually or as part of a team
- Collaborate with other departments, systems and product teams
- Work effectively with internal ICT teams to ensure timely and efficient resolution of issues and completion of projects
- Deliver high-quality service to team members and other departments
Budgetary Managment
- Ensure that budgetary requirements for infrastructure within your area of responsibility are up to date and planned for in a timely manner.
- Make sure budgetary information is readily available and that roadmap documentation is kept current to provide management with a clear understanding of requirements.
- Account for operational expenses such as health checks, licensing, and maintenance renewals within OPEX budgets.
- Implement effective licence management and provide timely input into budgeting to ensure AVBOB remains compliant.
- Optimise the SQL environment to maximise licence usage.
