The Program Instructor is a seasonal position that is primarily responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering the assigned recreation program’s curriculum. Duties include developing lesson plans, implementing program activities, and ensuring a safe, positive, and engaging environment for all participants. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Recreation Supervisor and/or Recreation Manager.
Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide a fun, safe, and constructive learning environment for all program participants; when applicable, teach age-appropriate skills, rules, and activities.
- Monitor and report any dangerous conditions, accidents, and damage to the Recreation Department.
- Maintain and enforce safety procedures, such as but not limited to monitoring weather, first aid readiness, and adherence to program rules.
- Conducts assessments of program participants to ensure proper age-appropriate program placement and modifies assignments as needed.
- Develops program curriculum and instructional drills, and monitors assigned recreation programs and Coordinators to ensure they meet established guidelines, expectations, and quality standards.
- Responsible for securing, setting up, and cleaning up program equipment and locations.
- Support, oversee, and assist in the development and training of Program Coordinators and Assistant Program Coordinators, including contributing to staff training protocols and ongoing skill development
- Responsible for assisting recreation supervisors with the development, planning, and preparation of daily lesson plans and activities.
- Maintain order, discipline, and program direction while conducting recreation program activities.
- Receives and provides program feedback to recreation supervisors and communicates appropriate information to participants and guardians.
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, and customer-focused environment for participants and families.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of recreation program supplies and equipment.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

- Knowledge of parks and recreation practices, procedures, and safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
- 3+ years of previous experience in working with youth or adult programs, or a combination of qualifying education and experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Available to work weekday daytime and evenings, and weekend shifts.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Must be able to physically perform all essential duties of the position.
Desirable Qualifications
- Certified in First Aid/CPR.
WORK SCHEDULE
Shifts can vary during operating hours from Monday through Sunday, daytime and evening shifts.
SUPERVISION
Does not have any direct reports. This position works independently with minimal supervision.

Environmental and Physical Conditions
Possible exposure to inclement weather conditions. Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, walking for prolonged periods of time; kneeling, climbing, bending, and stooping, moderate lifting and carrying; general manual dexterity; adequate hearing, vision, and speech required; and must be able to evaluate situations and react appropriately.
