About The Role
The Staff DevOps Engineer at Ad Hoc is a senior technical leadership position responsible for shaping the long-term infrastructure and DevOps strategy within the organization. As an individual contributor with a high degree of trust and autonomy, you will lead critical initiatives to improve software engineering practices, streamline deployment pipelines, and ensure systems meet security and compliance standards. This role requires a proactive approach to technical decision-making, stakeholder communication, and mentorship, serving as a subject matter expert in cloud infrastructure, automation, and DevOps best practices. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, government partners, and clients to design scalable, secure, and efficient solutions that support the mission of transforming government services. The position offers opportunities to influence organizational practices, lead complex projects, and contribute to the modernization efforts of the Veterans Affairs digital services.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, with 9+ years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent
- Expert-level mastery of core DevOps concepts including software installation, virtualization, containerization, and networking
- Proficiency in Terraform/Terragrunt, including module design and multi-environment state management at scale
- Extensive experience with GitHub Actions and Argo CD for designing and troubleshooting complex CI/CD pipelines
- Deep knowledge of HAProxy/OpenResty in production environments
- Strong expertise with AWS Cloud Services, including EKS/Kubernetes architecture, workload scheduling, and lifecycle management
- Proven experience leading infrastructure design decisions and effectively communicating tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience ensuring compliance with CMS/NIST standards to support Authority to Operate (ATO) processes
- U.S. citizenship or current legal authorization to work and reside in the United States without sponsorship, with the ability to pass government background checks
Responsibilities
- Serve as an emerging subject matter expert and individual contributor, demonstrating trust, autonomy, and empowerment in technical decision-making
- Lead and monitor the ability to meet project scope, schedule, and delivery requirements, supporting adjacent programs as needed
- Shape the technical strategy of the program, advocating for optimal solutions and communicating tradeoffs effectively
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders to improve technical decision-making and consolidate DevOps tools and services across teams
- Mentor team members and contribute to developing a high-performing engineering culture
- Lead critical projects and cross-cutting initiatives that impact multiple teams or programs
- Present technical topics clearly and effectively to clients, stakeholders, and engineers, articulating complexity and tradeoffs
- Guide cloud infrastructure and pipeline design decisions, balancing cost, reliability, and efficiency at a program level
- Develop and operate full lifecycle infrastructure solutions, leveraging cloud services and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools
- Set technical direction for libraries, modules, and packages used across projects
- Ensure systems incorporate security best practices and align with CMS/NIST standards to maintain ATO
- Establish and evolve CI/CD strategies to enhance software quality and delivery speed organization-wide
- Integrate tooling to meet non-functional requirements such as security, quality, and static analysis
- Plan and execute migrations to cloud-native data services, ensuring minimal disruption and optimal performance
- Participate in planning sessions, technical depth interviews, and client presentations, often traveling to engage directly with partners
- Collaborate with government partners and development teams to ensure compliance with security, SLA, and performance standards
