What You'll Do:
- In this role, you will create solutions to complex technical challenges while coding, testing, troubleshooting, debugging, and documenting the systems you develop.
- This role will drive a team responsible for expanding OCC’s analytics capabilities by making internal corporate data accessible and usable to analysts throughout the organization.
- This role will drive the design and building of our internal analytics data warehouse and the maintenance of the supporting extract, load, and transform processes. This role will also demonstrate expertise in OCC’s corporate data sets and support teams across the organization in successfully harnessing this data.
- This role will drive a team to collaborate with business users and technical teams across the organization to facilitate data-driven decision making by enabling exploration and analysis of historical and near real-time data access using on premise and cloud-based tools and technologies.
- This role will drive the team responsible for gathering requirements and designing solutions that address the problem at hand while also anticipating yet-to-be-asked analytical questions, as well as collaborating with, and mentoring, team members in defining and owning processes for developing and maintaining our analytics platform to meet the company’s security and IT standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily.
- Own end-to-end development of Java-based data pipeline features using Spring Batch and Spring Boot, independently delivering production-ready components with appropriate testing, documentation, and fault-tolerance patterns.
- Design and implement Kafka consumer and producer services, applying partition strategy, offset management, and consumer group coordination; author and version Protobuf schemas in line with cross-team schema governance standards.
- Build and maintain data lake solutions on AWS S3 using Apache Iceberg, managing table partitioning, snapshot compaction, and schema evolution for high-volume financial data workloads.
- Write and optimize complex analytical SQL against Trino/Starburst to deliver fast, federated data access for downstream consumers, reporting teams, and regulatory workflows, tuning queries for performance at scale.
- Integrate and maintain HashiCorp Vault for secrets management across platform services, implementing Vault Agent sidecar injection, Kubernetes authentication, and automated rotation policies.
- Drive observability for owned services by instrumenting Java applications with OpenTelemetry and building Splunk dashboards and SLO-driven alerts covering latency, throughput, error rates, and processing deadlines.
- Contribute to Kubernetes-based deployment pipelines via Rancher and Harness, authoring and maintaining Helm charts, managing environment-specific configurations, and ensuring reliable zero-downtime rollouts.
- Actively use AI-assisted development tools, including Claude Code, to accelerate feature development, code review, test generation, and documentation, championing their adoption as part of team productivity practices.
- Participate in on-call rotations and lead production incident response for owned services, performing structured root cause analysis, post-mortems, and driving systemic remediation to meet SLA, RTO, and RPO targets.

- 3-5 years of professional software engineering experience with a demonstrated track record of independently delivering production-grade features and owning components in complex, distributed enterprise systems.
- Proven ability to onboard quickly into large codebases and deliver meaningful, production-ready contributions, showing strong technical judgment and self-directed problem solving.
- Working understanding of distributed systems design including message delivery semantics, idempotent processing, consumer group coordination, and fault-tolerant architecture patterns applied in real production environments.
- Hands-on cloud experience with AWS, including practical knowledge of S3, IAM, and VPC networking, and the ability to design and reason about high-availability and failover topologies in a production setting.
- Consistent and active participation in Agile delivery, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, architecture reviews, and cross-team technical dependency coordination, with a track record of reliable delivery.
- Demonstrated comfort in compliance-sensitive environments, collaborating with security and audit teams on access control governance, secrets management, and open-source vulnerability remediation.
- Ability to perform well under pressure in time-sensitive production environments where data correctness, hard processing deadlines, and system availability carry material business and regulatory impact.
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI-assisted engineering workflows, including Claude Code, with hands-on experience or strong readiness to adopt these tools as a core part of daily development and team productivity.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document architectural decisions clearly, participate constructively in design reviews, and translate technical topics for non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborative and team-oriented, with early experience mentoring junior colleagues and the interpersonal skills to work effectively with business, technical, and non-technical professionals in a fast-paced agile environment.
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in core Java including concurrency fundamentals, JVM basics, and modern language features; solid hands-on experience with Spring Boot and Spring Batch for production batch and event-driven workloads.
- Hands-on experience with Kafka producer/consumer development, partition strategy, and offset management; proficiency authoring and versioning Protobuf schemas with attention to backward compatibility.
- Production experience with AWS S3 including lifecycle policies, multipart uploads, and event-driven integrations; solid working knowledge of Apache Iceberg table management including partitioning, compaction, and schema evolution.
- Solid ability to write and optimize complex analytical SQL against Trino/Starburst or equivalent federated query engines; experience working with large-scale, multi-source datasets and understanding of query performance tuning.
- Working proficiency with Kubernetes constructs including deployments, ConfigMaps, Secrets, and network policies; experience authoring Helm charts and participating in CI/CD delivery workflows.
- Practical experience integrating HashiCorp Vault in containerized environments, including Vault Agent sidecar injection, Kubernetes authentication, and fine-grained access policy authoring.
- Demonstrated experience instrumenting Java applications with OpenTelemetry for distributed traces, metrics, and structured logs; proficiency in maintaining Splunk dashboards and SPL queries for operational monitoring.
- Solid command of Git branching strategies and CI/CD pipeline development using Jenkins or equivalent tools; working experience with Artifactory and automated SonarQube and Black Duck quality gate enforcement.
- Active familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, with hands-on experience applying them to code generation, refactoring, unit test authoring, and documentation in a production engineering environment.
- Working knowledge of relational database systems such as PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, partitioning, and connection pool management for high-availability workloads.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in quantitative discipline (e.g., Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering) or equivalent professional experience; Master’s degree preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience as a software engineer, data engineer, analytics engineer, business intelligence analyst, data analyst, data scientist, or research analyst

Compensation
- The salary range listed for any given position is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. If hired at OCC, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors such as skills, experience and/or education.

Salary Range
$88,600.00 - $151,900.00
Incentive Range
6% to 10%
