About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer to spearhead our technical research and development initiatives. This leadership role involves guiding multiple R&D projects, providing strategic technical direction, and mentoring engineering teams. Reporting directly to the President, the successful candidate will serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) on key programs, collaborating closely with program managers and stakeholders to ensure project success. The position offers an opportunity to influence the future of cyber-physical security, lead innovative research efforts, and contribute to the development of next-generation defense technologies. The role is primarily remote, with some travel to customer sites and our Mount Airy, NC office, and offers a competitive salary range of $190,000 to $225,000.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in software development or R&D roles.
- Proven experience leading software development teams and managing technical projects with shipped products.
- Strong hands-on development skills and comprehensive understanding of modern SDLC, CI/CD, and DevSecOps practices.
- Experience managing external stakeholder relationships and coordinating complex projects.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and team mentoring abilities.
- U.S. Citizenship and eligibility to obtain a DoW Security Clearance.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate software development teams utilizing agile methodologies across multiple research and development projects.
- Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) and technical lead for active DoW research programs, including projects for the MDA, Navy, and USAF.
- Supervise and mentor engineering staff at various experience levels, fostering professional growth and technical excellence.
- Develop and execute the company's software R&D strategy and technology roadmap.
- Provide thought leadership in software engineering, DevSecOps, and AI-assisted development methodologies.
- Identify, pursue, and manage business development opportunities, including SBIR/STTR proposals and new defense initiatives.
- Oversee proposal development, review technical content, and coordinate submission efforts.
- Extend VCS technologies to new defense applications and customer segments.
- Drive continuous improvement in development, testing, and integration practices to enhance product quality and efficiency.
