About The Role
Stripe is seeking a highly experienced Full Stack Staff Engineer to join the Identity team, a critical component of Stripe’s strategic infrastructure. In this role, you will be responsible for defining the technical direction and architecture of core identity systems, including the Identity Store, verification platforms, and fraud detection infrastructure. This is an influential position that requires a blend of technical judgment, architectural expertise, and leadership to turn ambitious visions into reliable, scalable systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including machine learning, product management, legal, and engineering, to ensure the development of robust identity verification solutions that serve millions of verifications monthly for prominent clients such as OpenAI, Shopify, and WhatNot. The role offers an opportunity to work on pioneering challenges like adversarial AI defense, networked identity infrastructure, and low-friction KYC APIs, shaping the future of digital identity verification at a global scale.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of software engineering experience
- 5+ years in strategic technical leadership roles
- Experience leading engineering teams on API design, frameworks, or client libraries
- Proven track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that accelerate business growth
- Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively
- Experience with multiple programming languages such as Ruby, TypeScript, Python, Scala, Java, Go, and SQL
- Familiarity with infrastructure tools like MongoDB, Splunk, Prometheus
- Autonomous with high levels of responsibility and ownership
- Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and foster psychological safety
Responsibilities
- Define and own the technical strategy for core identity systems, including architecture decisions and risk management
- Lead the development of new platforms from inception to production, including the Identity Store and advanced fraud detection pipelines
- Architect and implement scalable, reliable, and secure systems with a focus on observability and alerting
- Drive cross-functional alignment by partnering with ML, product, legal, and engineering teams to ensure platform abstractions meet diverse needs
- Set engineering standards across backend, ML, mobile, and frontend teams, leading design reviews and mentoring senior engineers
- Operate systems with a high degree of ownership, ensuring high availability, security, and performance
- Identify technical risks early and surface solutions to mitigate potential failures or vulnerabilities
