Les avions durables nécessitent de nouveaux concepts impliquant des phénomènes physiques de plus en plus complexes. Ceux-ci intègrent les interactions multi-physiques de l’aérodynamique, de la propulsion, des structures et des matériaux. Pour y parvenir, Airbus mène actuellement une transformation numérique de la conception, de la fabrication et des services où les produits seront conçus de manière plus intégrée en ce qui concerne l'ensemble de leur cycle de vie, depuis la conception,… en passant par la fabrication, la maintenance, l'exploitation,…. jusqu'à la retraite.

Pour relever les nouveaux défis de conception, Airbus, l'ONERA et le DLR ont lancé un nouveau projet commun de logiciel CFD, appelé CODA. Cette nouvelle plateforme CFD intégrée, conçue pour des architectures parallèles et hétérogènes efficaces, permet l'intégration de composants CFD interopérables avancés, y compris en particulier les méthodes de volumes finis d'ordre supérieur et de Galerkin discontinu.

L'approximation d'ordre élevé offre un cadre flexible dans lequel la résolution spatiale peut être facilement adaptée, non seulement par adaptation locale du maillage (h-adaptation), mais également en modifiant localement le degré p de la reconstruction polynomiale (p-adaptation).

Cette technologie est l’un des principaux outils permettant de soutenir la transformation numérique d’Airbus.

La thèse consistera:

•  à développer un processus d'adaptation h curviligne basé sur des métriques de qualité industrielle pour les méthodes d'ordre élevé de CODA (FV, DG).

• à développement d'un processus d'adaptation de maillage curviligne, ainsi que sur des techniques d'intégration de surfaces curvilignes pour les équations fluides. La simulation autonome (maillage et résolution) des configurations des avions au décollage et à l'atterrissage est l'objectif principal.

Enfin, les techniques adaptatives seront évaluées sur des cas plus proches de la frontière du domaine de vol, où les méthodes numériques plus classiques sont connues pour leurs écarts dans leurs prévisions.

A PhD position about the Curvilinear Mesh Adaptation for Aircraft Design is proposed in the Engineering Flight Physics Capability Team within Airbus Civil Aircraft in Toulouse.

Mission of the team

The Mission of the Flight Physics Capability Operations domain (1GZ) is to support, develop and deliver world-class customer-oriented computational simulation means and services in particular for Aerodynamics, multi-phase flows, convective heat transfer, and icing disciplines, through technical excellence, continuous innovation and realistic commitments.

The Role

Sustainable aircrafts require new concepts involving increasingly complex physical phenomena. Those integrate the multi-physics interactions of aerodynamics, propulsion, structures and materials. To achieve it, Airbus is currently leading a digital design, manufacturing and services transformation where products will be designed in a more integrated way with regards to its whole life cycle from design, … going through manufacturing, maintenance, operation, …. up to retirement.

To tackle the new design challenges, Airbus, ONERA and DLR have launched a new common CFD software project, called CODA. This new integrated CFD platform, designed for efficient parallel and heterogeneous architectures, permits the integration of advanced interoperable CFD components, including in particular higher order Finite Volume and Discontinuous Galerkin methods.

The high-order approximation offers a flexible framework in which the spatial resolution can be conveniently adapted, not only by local mesh adaptation (h-adaptation), but also by locally modifying the degree p of the polynomial reconstruction (p-adaptation). 

This technology is one of the key enablers to support Airbus digital transformation.

The goal of the present PhD program is to develop an industrial grade metric-based curvilinear h-adaptation process for the high-order methods of CODA (FV, DG).

The focus will then be brought to the development of a curvilinear mesh adaptation process, as well as curvilinear surface integration techniques for fluid equations.

Autonomous simulation (mesh and resolution) of aircrafts configurations at take off and landing are the primary target.

Finally, the adaptive techniques will be evaluated on cases closer to the border of the flight envelope, where more classical numerical methods are known for their discrepancies in their previsions.

Required skills:

As an essential part of our dynamic team developing advanced electrical and computer solutions for projects primarily related to missile and aircraft systems. You will design, fabricate, analyze, and integrate hardware, firmware, and software solutions that will successfully address a wide variety of customer challenges.

You will also test and troubleshoot hardware, firmware, and software in both lab and field environments.

Design electrical and/or software architectures and integrated systems for real-time, mission-critical systems that include flight systems, sensors, ground vehicles, and space hardware.

 In addition, you will collaborate and communicate with project managers, customers, and team members to determine and develop hardware and software requirements. You will a contributor to system hardware and software architecture decisions based on customer performance requirements, schedule, and cost constraints (including build vs. buy trades).

-Support task execution including electrical system design, avionics design, payload integration, space hardware design, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, usage of electrical test equipment, system debugging, and systems engineering.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering from an ABET accredited institution with a minimum of 2 years of experience. 

Must have excellent communication skills and, demonstrate capabilities in one or more of the following areas:

Electrical system design Electrical circuit design and simulation Hardware and software interface design and integration C/C++ software development Troubleshooting/debugging hardware/software in a lab and/or field environment

Must be a US citizen and be in or willing to relocate to the Huntsville area.
