Avon Fire & Rescue Service has a vacancy on our Service Leadership Board for an Assistant Chief Fire Officer. The Service operates within the four Unitary Authorities of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and has 900 employees. Our operational area encompasses a broad risk profile.

As a member of the Leadership Board you will be required to devise and lead the implementation of strategies to further improve the quality and effectiveness of services provided, working in collaboration with partner organisations. The role involves engagement with Elected Members, working together to shape the direction of the Service. This requires political awareness and a detailed understanding of community issues.
The successful candidate will be a strong leader with extensive experience across a range of strategic disciplines operating at senior management level. This role requires proven experience of strategic operational command, integrated risk management planning, business and financial planning, performance and people management and partnership working. You should have a proven record of delivering results and improvements. Candidates will be required to evidence well-developed problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve complex operational and organisational issues.
This post requires candidates who welcome the challenge of a broad range of responsibilities and have the ability to make a significant contribution to the work of the Fire Authority and help shape its strategic development. Experience of managing change to improve organisational effectiveness is essential.

This post is open to existing Area Managers (Temporary or Substantive) and ACFOs within the UK Fire & Rescue Service.
The selection process includes the application form which will be shortlisted by a Panel of Elected Members of the Fire Authority. Successful candidates at the shortlisting stage will be invited to complete a critical incident and business continuity exercise and internal and external stakeholder engagement session (likely to be held the week commencing 13 May 2024). Depending on the outcome of the exercise and stakeholder session, successful candidates will be invited to a formal interview and presentation to the Chief Fire Officer, supported by a Panel of the Fire Authority (likely to be Monday 3 June 2024).
