This appointment is conceived as a strategic, institution-level role aimed at strengthening the School of Design &Media’s research capacity, intellectual leadership, and external standing. Itis not intended as a conventional teaching appointment, but as a critical hire to advance the School’s positioning within the evolving landscape of media, design, and emerging technologies.
We are seeking individual(s) who are able to operate as thought leaders and practice-led innovators; those who can define directions, not simply deliver within them. The ideal candidate will be versatile in illustration and media applications, with the ability to translate ideas across formats, platforms, and emerging technological contexts.
The appointee will be expected to lead and expand the School’s capabilities in areas such as immersive and extended-reality environments, data-informed creative practice, and future media ecosystems. This includes actively shaping the School’s research and innovation agenda through practice-based and interdisciplinary inquiry, while aligning with national and international priorities.
The role requires a high degree of ownership and agency. The appointee is expected to move beyond assigned responsibilities to proactively identify opportunities, mobilize resources, and deliver outcomes that contribute to the School’s growth and reputation.
A key expectation is the ability to produce and contribute to high-impact outputs—whether scholarly, creative, or industry-facing—and to play an active role in cultivating a strong research culture within the School. This includes contributing to staff capability development, mentoring where appropriate, and elevating the overall standard of practice and inquiry.
The appointee will also be expected to establish and sustain meaningful academic and industry partnerships, positioning the School within relevant networks and contributing to strategic initiatives, exhibitions, and platforms that enhance visibility and engagement at both regional and global levels.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Teaching & Curriculum Delivery
- Teach and supervise modules across media and emerging technology domains, including but not limited to:
o AI-Generated Content (text-to-image, video, generative storytelling)
o New Media Practices (interactive media, web-based experiences, transmedia storytelling)
o Immersive Media (AR/VR/XR, virtual production, spatial media)
o Creative Technology (real-time engines, generative systems, computational media)
- Take full responsibility for the design, delivery, and assessment of assigned modules, ensuring alignment with industry and future-oriented practices
- Facilitate studio-based, project-driven learning, integrating Context–Concept–Craft approaches
- Guide students in concept development, prototyping, and production workflows, including hybrid AI-human creative pipelines
- Contribute to advancing SDM’s strengths in:
o Immersive and extended-reality environments
o Data-informed creative practices
o Future media ecosystems
- Provide academic leadership and support in the management and delivery of assigned modules for the School of Design & Media, which include:
o Designing, preparing, and developing module/teaching materials
o Contributing towards the review of curriculum and academic activities
o Maintaining records relating to students’ progress, performance, and attendance
o Supervising and assessing students’ assignments/works/projects
2. Academic Leadership & Programme Development
- Provide academic leadership in shaping curriculum aligned with:
o AI and creative technologies
o Interdisciplinary and cross-school collaborations
o Industry-relevant skills and future job roles
- Undertake approximately 20 contact hours per week, including:
o Lectures, tutorials, and studio facilitation
o Mentoring collaborative and interdisciplinary projects
- Design and develop innovative teaching materials, incorporating:
o AI tools and workflows
o Emerging media platforms
o Practice-led and research-informed approaches
- Contribute to curriculum review, validation, and enhancement, ensuring relevance to evolving media ecosystems
- Support the School’s research and innovation agenda through:
o Thought leadership in emerging media and AI
o Practice-based and interdisciplinary inquiry
o Alignment with national and international priorities
3. Industry Engagement & Collaboration
- Establish and maintain strong industry and academic partnerships in media, technology, and creative sectors
- Initiate and support:
o Live projects and industry briefs
o Collaborative research and innovation initiatives
o Exhibitions, screenings, showcases, and public engagements
- Contribute to building meaningful collaborations that enhance:
o Knowledge exchange
o Applied learning opportunities
o Institutional visibility and impact
- Support the School in producing high-impact scholarly, creative, and funded outputs
4. Research, Practice & Innovation
- Engage in practice-based research and/or scholarly activities in areas such as:
o AI in creative practice
o Generative media and storytelling
o Emotional design and interactive experiences
o Digital culture and future media
- Contribute to the development of a robust research culture and staff capability within the School
- Advance interdisciplinary research and innovation initiatives that strengthen SDM’s positioning locally and internationally
- Stay current with developments in:
o AI tools and platforms
o Emerging media technologies
o Pedagogical innovations in creative education

6. Requirements
· Minimum Master’s degree with relevant certification in relevant area
· Proficient in applications, objectives, and platforms of relevant area
· Minimum 8 years of extensive academic and/or industry experience
· Positive, enthusiastic, and results-oriented with the ability to engage students in their learning
· Able to perform in a fast-paced environment, to adapt, multi-task and meet deadlines
· A team player with excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation and writing skills
· Strong track record of research/practice, with actual or potential for research output in your chosen field
· Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
