RESPONSIBILITIES
The Crisis Operations Worker is the designated case owner responsible for the end-to-end management of child protection crisis, from the point of intake and activation through to stabilisation and transition.
This role delivers timely, safety-critical interventions to Children and Young Persons (CYP) and their families who are experiencing acute or escalating risk. It requires the integration of structured professional judgement, real-time operational control, and coordinated multi-agency response to secure immediate safety and contain risk.
Due to the operational requirements of this role, when required, employees may be expected to work non-standard working hours.
Crisis Intake, Triage and Activation
- Respond and manage a crisis timely. This includes conducting urgent triage, assessing the immediacy and severity of risk, and determining the most appropriate response approach
- Activate suitable crisis interventions—such as medical review, or statutory escalation as necessary
Risk and Safety Assessment
- Conduct prompt and comprehensive crisis assessments, either on-site or remotely, to determine the immediate safety of the child, young person or vulnerable adult. This includes evaluating imminent risk, environmental risks and any history of recurrence or escalation
Immediate Safety Intervention and Stabilisation
- Develop and implement Immediate Safety Plans (ISP) to address identified risks
- Coordinate urgent interventions such as medical assessments, alternative caregiving arrangements, or protective measures where necessary
- Conduct continuous reassessment of evolving risk with timely adjustments to intervention strategies in consultation with supervisors and statutory partners to ensure that all actions remain proportionate, appropriate, and defensible
Crisis Case Ownership and Operational Execution
- Maintain full operational oversight and follow-through of all actions taken during the crisis phase. This includes sustaining real-time situational awareness, coordinating tasks across multiple stakeholders, and ensuring timely completion of agreed actions
- Identify early indicators of escalation or deterioration and respond decisively to maintain control of the situation and safeguard the child/ vulnerable adult
- Maintain clear, accurate, and timely documentation of all crisis-related activities which meet organisational and regulatory standards and are audit-ready. This includes recording risk assessments, decisions made, rationale for actions, and supervisory consultations
Inter-Agency Coordination
- Coordinate with key partners and stakeholders, including relevant government agencies, healthcare providers, schools, and community agencies to ensure smooth execution of tasks and alignment of objectives
Family Engagement
- Engage families in complex and sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgement and able to apply effective de-escalation and escalation strategies and uphold safety and protection standards
- Contribute to and support decisions relating to statutory intervention, medical review, and placement arrangements, ensuring that all decisions are well-reasoned and appropriately consulted
Practice Reflection and System Improvement
- Participate and engage in case reviews and critical incident debriefs.
- Contribute to organisational learning by identifying practice gaps and supporting the refinement of crisis response protocols and standard operating procedures
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related discipline
OTHER INFORMATION
Relevant Experience
- Minimum of 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in child protection, family violence, or crisis/high-risk casework
- Experience in multi-agency coordination is preferred
- Familiarity with Structured Decision Making (SDM) or similar risk assessment frameworks is advantageous
