Roles and Responsibilities:
The Middle School Lead Teacher is responsible for maximizing student learning and development through the planning, preparation, and teaching of comprehensive educational programs that meet students' individual learning needs and achieve specific student outcomes. Theyfoster academic growth, social development, and critical thinking skills while creating an inclusive learning environment that supports students' holistic development.
Develop and Implement Curriculum:
- Design and deliver a comprehensive, age-appropriate curriculum that aligns with school standards and educational goals and is in line with the science of learning.
- Teach mathematics and science, adapting instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, including hands-on activities, group work, and project-based learning, to engage students and promote critical thinking.
Create a Positive and Inclusive Classroom Environment:
- Foster a supportive, safe, and inclusive classroom where all students feel valued and respected.
- Establish clear expectations for behavior, classroom routines, and academic goals, creating a structured and nurturing environment.
- Promote social-emotional learning, helping students build essential skills such as empathy, collaboration, and self-regulation.
Assess Student Progress and Provide Feedback:
- Regularly assess students’ academic progress through formal and informal assessments, including tests, quizzes, projects, and observations.
- Provide constructive, timely, and personalized feedback to students to help them understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
- Use data from assessments to adjust teaching strategies and support individual learning needs.
Differentiate Instruction to Meet Student Needs:
- Tailor lessons to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to succeed.
- Modify assignments, assessments, and classroom activities for students with varying levels of understanding and those with special needs.
- Provide additional support for students who need extra help and offer enrichment opportunities for advanced learners.
Support Social and Emotional Development:
- Support the development of students' social-emotional skills, including conflict resolution, communication, and self-awareness.
- Foster positive relationships among students through team-building exercises, class discussions, and cooperative learning activities.
- Help students set personal goals, track their progress, and celebrate achievements to build confidence and motivation.
Collaborate with Other Teachers and Staff:
- Work closely with other teachers, EAL (English as an Additional Language) instructors, and subject-specific teachers to support students' individual needs.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives and collaborate with other teachers to plan interdisciplinary projects or school events.
- Attend meetings with school leadership, counselors, and other staff to discuss students’ academic, social, and emotional progress.
Communicate with Parents and Caregivers:
- Regularly update parents on their child's academic progress, behavior, and overall well-being through newsletters, emails, and parent-teacher conferences.
- Maintain open lines of communication with parents to address concerns, provide updates, and collaborate on strategies to support student learning at home.
- Provide parents with resources and suggestions to help their children with homework, studying, and personal development.
Manage Classroom Behavior and Foster Positive Relationships:
- Establish clear classroom rules and routines to maintain order and encourage positive behavior.
- Use positive reinforcement techniques to motivate students and promote a positive learning environment.
- Address behavioral issues in a constructive manner, using conflict resolution strategies and involving students in discussions about appropriate behavior.
Plan and Supervise Field Trips and Extracurricular Activities:
- Organize and supervise field trips, school events, and extracurricular activities that enhance students' learning experiences and provide real-world connections to classroom content.
- Ensure that activities are educational, engaging, and safe for students.
- Communicate with parents about upcoming trips and volunteer opportunities to ensure participation and support.
Create and Maintain Classroom Materials and Resources:
- Organize and maintain classroom supplies, materials, and resources to ensure a well-prepared learning environment.
- Prepare visual aids, bulletin boards, and learning stations that support student engagement and enhance classroom instruction.
- Maintain student records, including grades, attendance, and progress reports, in an organized and accessible manner.
Engage in Professional Development:
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in teaching, curriculum development, and classroom management.
- Attend workshops, conferences, and seminars to learn new teaching strategies, educational technologies, and methods for supporting diverse learners.
- Collaborate with colleagues to share knowledge, resources, and strategies that improve teaching and student outcomes.
Support School Community and Culture:
- Actively participate in school events, activities, and committees that promote school spirit and community engagement.
- Serve as a role model for students by demonstrating respect, responsibility, and commitment to the school community.
- Foster positive relationships with colleagues, students, and parents, contributing to a collaborative and welcoming school environment.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A recognized bachelor's degree in teaching, education or related field of study (math/science) with recognized teaching credential.
- A minimum of three years successful full-time teaching experience in a K-12 school.
- International school teaching experience preferred.
- Curriculum and program development knowledge preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Familiarity with cognitive science-based teaching and learning is an advantage.
