The Climate Transformation Programme (CTP) aims to develop, inspire and accelerate knowledge-based solutions and educate future leaders to establish the stable climate and environment necessary for resilient, just, and sustainable Southeast Asian societies.

CTP will generate knowledge and innovation across disciplines including climate and Earth science, ecology, materials science, artificial intelligence, humanities, social sciences and the arts, finance, health, and engineering. It will also translate state-of-the-art scientific results into real world solutions for Singapore, and it will transfer these solutions to Southeast Asia (SEA) and beyond.

As part of this programme, Cluster 5 Climate and finance markets will measure and price climate risk in financial markets, design innovative risk financing solutions to climate change, and quantify economic impact of climate policies.

The Research Fellow will be based in the Nanyang Business School and will contribute to interdisciplinary research under Cluster 5, with a particular emphasis on empirical analysis, AI-enabled data construction, and policy-relevant research outputs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and execute empirical research projects related to climate risk, financial markets, and climate policy, in alignment with the objectives of Cluster 5: Climate and Finance Markets under the Climate Transformation Programme.

• Construct, clean, and analyze large-scale datasets combining financial, environmental, and policy information, including both structured and unstructured data sources.

• Apply artificial intelligence and large language model (LLM) tools to extract, structure, and analyze information from unstructured sources such as corporate disclosures, regulatory filings, policy documents, and project-level reports.

• Develop and maintain retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and related AI-enabled research workflows to support dataset construction, empirical analysis, and evidence synthesis.

• Implement rigorous empirical and quantitative methods to measure and price climate-related risks in financial markets and to assess the economic and financial impacts of climate policies.

• Contribute to the preparation of academic manuscripts for submission to leading peer-reviewed journals, as well as policy-oriented reports and research outputs.

• Collaborate closely with faculty investigators, research staff, and interdisciplinary partners across the University and with external collaborators.

• Support project coordination activities, including documentation of research workflows, version control of code and data, and supervision or mentoring of research assistants where appropriate.

Key Competency and Qualifications Requirements:

• PhD (or PhD near completion) in Computer Science, Finance, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline.

• Strong training in quantitative, empirical, or computational research methods.

• Experience working with large-scale datasets, including unstructured text data.

• Familiarity with AI and large language model (LLM) tools; experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) frameworks is an advantage.

The Role

The Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) is a new university-level research institute in the National University of Singapore (NUS), jointly supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and NUS.  SGFIN aspires to develop deep research capabilities in sustainable and green finance, provide thought leadership in the sustainability space, and shape sustainability outcomes across the financial sector and the economy at large.

This role is ideally suited for those wishing to work in academic or industry research in the financial sector, particularly in the area of sustainable, responsible, and green investing and valuation. The responsibilities of the role will include designing and developing a framework to distill various information regarding corporate sustainability efforts and performance into various metrics that can be analyzed further to support decision making in the corporate, financial, and societal spheres.

There are no teaching obligations for this position, and the candidate will have the opportunity to develop their research portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to assume the following responsibilities:

• Design research projects in close collaboration with the Institute’s Directors (Prof. Sumit Agarwal / A.Prof Johan Sulaeman / A.Prof Weina Zhang) and Research Affiliates
• Take ownership and responsibility for the successful delivery of research projects, ensuring they are completed within the required deadline and allocated budget, and meeting/exceeding project specifications and targets
• Participate in pre-project activities such as identifying required resources to ensure project completion including staffing and organizational needs of the project team, and preparing high-level project plans with project timeline and resource requirements
• Development of research hypotheses
• Plan and contribute to the collection and organization of corporate financial and sustainability disclosures
• Plan and contribute to the collection and organization of information regarding government policies and regulations in the sustainability space
• Contribute to qualitative and quantitative analyses of existing frameworks, to extend existing frameworks to develop a more comprehensive framework
• Monitor progress of research projects and provide necessary interventions to ensure smooth completion of each project
• Manage and coordinate project deliverables, ensuring their quality

Qualifications

• Academic background in the following subjects is preferred: finance, accounting, economics, business, sustainable/green finance, sustainability management, or related disciplines. A bachelor’s degree is required, a master’s degree in one of these subjects is highly preferred, with a PhD degree preferred
• Basic understanding of financial sector (banks and other financial institutions), financial markets, corporate financial statements, and credit risk analysis, is required.
• A thorough knowledge of the research field of sustainable economics or finance is highly preferred.
• Quantitative analytical and/or financial econometric skills, including knowledge of advanced statistical software packages, are highly desired, along with experience with empirical research methods, including developing, conducting and supporting research and data analysis of research projects.

Job Description

I am looking for up to two highly skilled and motivated individuals to work with me as full-time research professionals. 

You will work with NUS Business School Professor Karsten Müller at the Department of Finance. For the most part, you will support Karsten’s research agenda on macro-financial linkages and historical macroeconomic statistics. This work uses macro and micro data and cutting-edge statistical methods to understand when credit booms endanger financial stability, what the sources of long-run growth are, and how boom-bust cycles can shape the economy of a country for decades. Among other things, you will help to (a) construct novel data sources to measure credit market conditions and historical macroeconomic outcomes, (b) analyse data to understand the role of financial frictions on firm outcomes, and (c) help estimate measures of economic activity ranging back centuries for many countries. 
 
You will work with us on a variety of tasks, including data collection and analysis, statistical programming and data visualization, conducting literature reviews, summarizing research findings and policy documents, and editing research papers. You will have access to resources, including part-time research assistants, and collaborate closely with other members of Professor Müller’s lab. The most important requirement for this position is that you are highly ambitious and eager to learn, and you should ideally bring a proven an interest in economic research.

Role Overview

We are looking for a detail-oriented and highly organized Training Admin to support a Structured Training Program in the bank. This role is critical to ensuring the program remains compliant and well-coordinated through its completion. You will be the central point of contact for tracking progress, managing complex data, and coordinating essential program milestones for all eligible hires.
