What You’ll Get to Do:
The Paralegal will assist in the support of Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) matters supporting the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The work requires a general knowledge of the legal processes, procedures, and practices and activities in conjunction with knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and the ability to apply these skills to support DOJ Attorneys and other members of the administrative and litigation teams.
• Research and compile Division data, creating summaries and recognizing trends.
• Support Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and responses. Use DOJ reports and other research tools to compile and check the data.
• Coordinate internal DOJ processes and maintain tight organization, reporting and status upon request. This may include case/matter classification, employee time entries, identification of data gaps, inconsistencies, or errors and raising them with appropriate supervisors for comment and reconciliation.
• Work on technical writing tasks including contributing to ENRD’s Annual Book of Statistical Management Reports, data calls, and Key Performance Indicator reports.
• Experience performing factual research in Relativity and legal research in LexisNexis and/or Westlaw.
More About the Role:
- Works under the direction of Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor.
- Performs the following tasks while complying with established procedures: compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by DOJ personnel; summarizes requests and reports; maintains case files; performs simple legal and factual research; indexes, tracks and summarizes legal and DOJ data.
- Performs other document collection related activities, including document screening, and labeling of files to be scanned.
- Performs simple database searches.
You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
- Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study. Only the Contracting Officer can approve a waiver of the education requirements.
- At least one year of litigation paralegal experience required; strong organizational skills very helpful.
- Automated litigation support experience valued. Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation; must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
- Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of environmental laws and regulations, data analysis and mathematical ability, competence in Excel and Acrobat, comfortable with computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
- Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
- Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
- Trial experience very helpful.
- Automated litigation support experience valued.
- Extensive computer and database expertise (MS Excel and Word skills necessary).
