Job Description:
The pharmacy student (intern) assists pharmacists to provide pharmacy services including the evaluation and input of licensed independent practitioner orders/prescriptions, and the technical functions of drug procurement, preparation, and distribution. These and all other duties are completed under the supervision of a pharmacist. Pharmacy Intern Level II is a training, learning position. Students of an accredited school of pharmacy are required to complete training hours that may be part of a paid internship. Job Essentials
Provides customer service to patients, pharmacists, interns, technicians, and other healthcare professionals in the areas of responsibility.

Provides patient education/counseling under the direct supervision of the pharmacist on staff as training and mentoring permits.

Participates and supports the fiscal responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Healthcare as a whole.
Provides delivery of medications, information and/or service in a professional, timely manner and is actively engaged in department and team goals, activities, and projects.
Consistently attains appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by the pharmacist(s) on staff when working, understanding that the pharmacist is the supervisor of their activities.
Participates in quality improvement activities, and constantly seeks a team approach to developing and achieving best practices and processes.

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Essential Job Functions
Inpatient/Infusion Pharmacy:
*Assisting in accurate medication order interpretation. This involves selecting or compounding, dispensing, ensuring delivery of and stocking the correct products to fulfill physician orders. Fill medication drawers and automated dispensing cabinets, floor stock, and controlled substances as applicable.
*Compounding IV admixtures aseptically and accurately
*Operating or loading automation devices (robotics or automated cabinets) for drug dispensing
*Assisting other hospital staff with medication and pharmacy related issues via answering phone calls and responding to computerized medication messages
*Promptly and efficiently distributing patient medications promptly and efficiently, as well as delivers and restocks medications
*Completing monthly unit inspections for an assigned hospital area as assigned– this involves ensuring this area has no outdated medications, is appropriately stocked, and checking crash carts
*Clarifying prescriptions with physicians or appropriate staff members and participation in medication reconciliation with patients as assigned
*Counseling and providing medication education to transition of care patients prior to discharge as assigned
*Training, educating, and precepting new pharmacy technicians, students, and interns
*Participating on various departmental and interdepartmental committees
Outpatient/Non-Acute Pharmacy:
*Assisting in accurate medication order interpretation. This involves entering, selecting, filling, compounding, dispensing, and ensuring release of the final product to the correct person to fulfill prescriber orders
*Assisting patients and counseling of medication and pharmacy related issues via answering phone calls and in person consultations under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist
*Restocking frequently used medications and over the counter products in pharmacy areas in addition to operating applicable automation dispensing system devices within the pharmacy
*Receiving, transferring, or clarifying oral prescriptions with prescribers or appropriate staff members as authorized by state law and under pharmacist supervision
*Administering immunizations [if immunization certified via an accredited immunization program as allowed per state law]
*Training, educating, and precepting new pharmacy technicians, students, and interns
*Assisting other staff with medication issues and response to email and phone call concerns or follow-up
