The Northern District of Indiana is currently soliciting applications for Law Internship (Clerks) positions for the 2024 Academic Year. The intention of the Law Internship Program is to introduce participants to the federal legal system and receive an introduction to federal procedures in both the civil and criminal settings. Interns will be assigned projects from both the Civil and Criminal Divisions and will work with several different Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) over the course of the internship. Typical duties of the interns may include:

• Performing legal research and/or assisting with research projects;
• Drafting legal documents including motions, pleadings, or briefs;
• Assist in trial preparations;
• Observe court proceedings; and
• In limited instances, may be allowed to represent the government in routine hearings under the supervision of an AUSA before various federal courts.

Each Branch Office of the USAO for the Northern District of Indiana is located in a federal courthouse. This enables the interns to meet Judges, their clerks, and network among federal officials. The primary goal of the program is to introduce interns to the federal legal system, to develop their legal skills and, above all, to enjoy their overall internship experience.

• Work Schedule: You must be able to work at least 10 hours per week for duration of internship (at least 135 hours spread over the entire semester).
• Work Location: If selected, you will be expected to work at the location designated in this vacancy announcement. This is NOT a remote-work position. Telework may be permitted on a limited basis as authorized by the agency.
• Outside Employment Restriction: Interns are not permitted to work in a legal capacity - private or public- throughout the duration of the internship.

• Review policies, procedures, regulations, and directives regarding programmatic and administrative matters of the Corporation.
• Engage in research of pertinent laws, legal opinions, and precedents for cases and other legal matters.
• Investigate facts, research issues, and draft memoranda on sensitive matters, outlining cases and explaining the application of legal principles, recommendations, and conclusions.
• Work with senior attorneys in conducting investigations of alleged violations of laws, regulations, or policies in anticipation of litigation.
• Participate in preparing cases for litigation such as drafting of motions, memoranda, briefs and other pleadings stating the facts, analyzing the legal issues, identifying policy concerns, and making recommendations for justifying legal action.
