The Opportunity

The Controller, R&D and Gross Margin Improvement (GMI) serves our Core Diagnostics business and provides direct support to the VP, Core Diagnostic R&D and his direct staff (4 Divisional Vice Presidents, numerous Directors and Managers), the DVP, Regulatory Affairs and the Director, GMI and Cash Flow.

What You’ll Work On

• Supports annual R&D & Regulatory spend focused on development of immunoassay, clinical chemistry and hematology systems and assays, including a focus on unmet medical need, in various areas including infectious disease, cardiac care, metabolic, oncology, and neurologic assays as well as informatics solutions to help optimize diagnostics laboratory performance and automation solutions. 
• Responsible for the full range of controllership disciplines involving financial reporting, planning, consolidations, analysis and financial controls and to ensure the timeliness, accuracy, and integrity of all financial-related information including compliance with GAAP, Corporate and Divisional Policies and Procedures.
• Responsible for creating high impact business analyses and decision support to optimize margin improvement actions in all areas of the business. 
• Key member of the R&D senior staff and provides direction on short-term and long-term portfolio prioritization.
• Coordinates across Core Diagnostics to deliver highly visible project results and business case updates.  
• Supports the licensing organization in deal analysis for all early-stage IP acquisitions.
   

Position Accountability & Scope

The Controller acts as chief financial counsel to the leadership team and their staffs, and thus operates with a great deal of autonomy. This position has responsibility for providing the appropriate financial controls, budgetary systems, financial analysis tools that results in effective financial stewardship. The integrity and validity of financial information is critical to the organization in making timely and informed business decisions.

This critical leadership role requires:

• Exceptional degree of adaptable, creative, analytical and technical problem-solving abilities, along with the handling of a large variety of issues and tremendous balancing of priorities.    
• Ability to problem-solve, unplanned events occur frequently and involve technical and product issues, financial variances, and resource loading. These need to be addressed in an expeditious manner which involves knowledge of advanced analytical tools, system capabilities and influencing decisions by other disciplines.
• Ability to make effective trade-offs between many operating variables and successful resolution of numerous conflicts and constantly changing elements.
• High degree of business judgment, interpersonal and communication skills with multiple functions, areas and business units is required to successfully perform this role.
   

Core Job Responsibilities

• Set expectations of the financial organization's role in support of the business strategies, including alignment with other functional organizations. 
• Provide business focused analytics to determine potential margin improvement programs and viability of the actions with projections of gross margin impact over the OEM. The analytics require a deep understand of existing data sets and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple functions and business units. 
• Manage the development, consolidations, analysis, and explanation/publication of Plan/Rolling LBEs for the Income Statement, Balance Sheet/Cash Flow and Capital. 
• Review and understand actual financial results for the organization including ensuring the accuracy of financial information and related operational metrics including comparisons to appropriate benchmarks.
• Establish and maintain internal processes, procedures, and controls to ensure the integrity of financial assets and accuracy of financial statements and forecasts in compliance with Division/Corporate financial policies and procedures and SOX requirements.
• Create ad-hoc analysis for use in addressing business issues and strategic opportunities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting or Finance required. MBA or CPA/CMA highly desired.
• 10+ years of diverse financial experience required including business support, FP&A, general accounting, and project support. 
• Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and engage others to accomplish projects in a fast-paced, changing environment.
• Strong leadership and communication skills to interact with all levels of management, experience delivering financial information that adds value to management's decision-making process.
