Your Role

Your Profile

• Professional underwriting experience in the primary or reinsurance property insurance market for at least 10 years with a strong focus on Power and Engineering business segment in Asia
• Demonstrate proficient know how in this sector, for example by having worked in the power and engineering segment, through Loss Control Engineering experience or by demonstrating that there is significant on-the-job underwriting experience in this field including site visits
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or scientific related subject
• Desirable experience in engineering and risk management / risk inspections
• Sound technical knowledge of the relevant underwriting processes including risk evaluation, pricing high level of competence in reviewing contract wording exercises for the power and engineering business segment

Primary Purpose/Function of the role:

Lease Renewals, Expansions, and managing of reporting.

Essential Responsibilities:

Real Estate Lease Renewals. Consists of tracking critical dates, negotiating new lease terms with Landlords, handling the coordination of the execution of lease documents. This will be 40% of the role.

Real Estate Expansions (expanding of existing footprints). Expansions entail negotiating with existing Landlord as well as coordinating with facilities, architects, construction and legal. This is 40% of the role.

Managing reports.  These reports will be a critical date report, lease renewal report and others as needed.  This equates to 10% of the role.

General support as needed – This will be 10% of the role.

Experience:

Communicating and negotiating with Landlords, ability to read and understand leases, experience working with attorneys as it relates to real estate documents and creating and managing reports in excel and other databases, specifically Co-Star.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in real estate or comparable and a minimum of 8 years’ experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Good communication with the ability to speak with all levels of management, architects, brokers and legal.  Excellent time management skills, ability to self-manage and ability to prioritize duties.

The Opportunity

This position works out of our location in Pleasanton, CA, in the Heart Failure unit of our Medical Devices division. The position will focus primarily Abbott’s implantable pulmonary artery pressure monitor, left ventricular assist and extracorporeal membrane oxygenator product lines as well as related digital solutions.  The position may also serve other Abbott business units on occasion.   

As the Counsel, Intellectual Property, you’ll have the chance to strategically develop our worldwide patent portfolio, including directing and managing domestic and foreign outside counsel to prepare and prosecute patent applications.

What You’ll Work On

• Manage invention disclosures, including collecting and screening disclosures, conducting inventor interviews, presenting disclosures at patent committee and Invention Review Board meetings.
• Participate in the effective management of our external budget, including monthly, quarterly and annual budget reviews, quarterly forecasting, and reviewing outside counsel invoices.
• Conduct due diligence on potential mergers and acquisitions and freedom-to-operate assessments that drive strategic acquisitions and product development.
• Conduct in-depth analyses of competitor products and IP portfolios.
• Review outside counsel work to ensure the work, methodology, strategy and costs meet Abbott’s expectations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and counsel a variety of clients on IP and other legal issues.
• Interact with and provide legal and strategic guidance to senior management, engineers and other functional organizational leadership.
• Collaborate with commercial legal counsel, including preparing and reviewing research and development agreements, confidentiality agreements, license agreements, and consulting agreements and counseling the business regarding IP transactional matters.

Required Qualifications

• The successful candidate must have experience prosecuting mechanical, electro-mechanical, semiconductor and/or software patent applications as well as conducting agreement review and negotiations.
• Experience handling PTAB/EPO Oppositions and supporting patent litigation a plus.
• Significant freedom-to-operate or product clearance experience, preferably for medical device products.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, organizational, and follow-up skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and strategic thinking.

• Review, maintain and update current incentive schemes for the engineering community at JE locations in Europe and advice on improvements or consolidations

• Attend corporate meetings to identify potential IP and understand business trends. As a results, provide guidance to the engineering teams to apply for business relevant IP protection

• Support Tax and Finance team for establishment and review of service contracts involving IP related royalties

• Draft, review and negotiate ancillary real estate documents, including amendments, assignments, extensions/renewals, terminations, master services agreements, SNDAs, personal guarantees and estoppels.
