About The Role
Join the European Commission’s eGrants ecosystem as a Backend Engineer, developing business-critical solutions supporting calls, proposals, grants, participants, and audit processes.
You will build scalable Java services, APIs, integrations, and business logic while contributing to security, performance, testing, CI/CD, technical decisions, and mentoring.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate, JEE, EJB, WebLogic, and Kafka
- Implement business logic and integrate frontend components with backend services
- Build and secure RESTful APIs and web services
- Design data solutions using relational and NoSQL databases
- Ensure application security, scalability, performance, logging, and monitoring
- Develop unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito
- Integrate testing and code quality controls into CI/CD pipelines
- Configure cloud services, storage, serverless functionality, and managed Kubernetes
- Troubleshoot complex issues using logs, data analysis, and APM tools
- Perform code reviews, mentoring, and technical onboarding
- Collaborate with QA teams and participate in requirements refinement and estimation
- Maintain clear technical documentation
Requirements
- Strong Java backend development experience
- Strong experience with Spring Boot and Hibernate
- Hands-on experience with WebLogic, Kafka, JEE, and EJB
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MySQL, including complex SQL and database design
- Knowledge of MongoDB, CouchDB, or Cosmos DB, including consistency and performance trade-offs
- Strong REST API and web services experience, including OpenAPI/Swagger
- Experience with Maven, GitLab, Bamboo, Jenkins, and Nexus
- Experience with Jira, Git, Bitbucket, and wikis
- Experience with Dynatrace or similar APM tools
- Good knowledge of Agile and Scrum
- Experience with JUnit and Mockito
- Experience with SonarQube, SonarLint, Fortify, or similar code analysis/security tools
- Understanding of SOA, service buses, microservices, and distributed systems
- Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes
- Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT
- Experience with cloud services, including serverless, storage, and managed Kubernetes
- Experience with AI-assisted coding tools such as Amazon Q or Kiro
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and within international, multicultural teams
- Knowledge of public grants or audit management will be a strong advantage
- Experience with Camunda or Activiti will be a strong advantage
- Knowledge of European open-source/reusable components will be a plus
- Knowledge of system analysis and project management will be a plus
