Schedule: Monday to Friday (8am to 5pm PHT)
Hybrid Set Up: 2-3x per week onsite
About The Role
The DBSi (Dealer Business System) Developer maintains, enhances and progressively modernises the core DBSi system, a long-established IBM i application that has supported the business for more than thirty years. DBSi remains business-critical, running the dealer management, parts, service and financial processes that the organisation relies on daily.
This is a hands-on development role for someone who can work confidently inside an established COBOL codebase, understand the business logic behind it and make safe, well-tested changes in a production environment. Equally, it is a forward-looking role. We are actively using AI-assisted development to document, analyse and simplify the DBSi codebase, reduce key-person risk and reduce our reliance on external support partners. The successful candidate will be a willing participant in that modernisation journey, not just a maintainer of legacy code.
The role suits an experienced IBM i developer looking for stable, meaningful work on a system that genuinely matters to the business, as well as a developer earlier in their career who wants to build deep, in-demand skills in a technology area where the global talent pool is shrinking and expertise is increasingly valuable.
What will you do?
Development and maintenance
- Analyse, design, develop, test and deploy enhancements and fixes to the DBSi application across COBOL, CL, CLLE, RPG RPGLE, SQL, SQLRPGLE, and DDS.
- Support and maintenance of the IBMi power system stack, including DB2 for i and other 3rd party applications that support DBSi
- Maintain and improve batch processes, interfaces and integrations between DBSi and surrounding systems.
- Investigate and resolve production incidents and defects, including root-cause analysis and permanent remediation.
- Write and maintain clear technical documentation for programs, data structures and business processes, reducing tribal knowledge and key-person risk.
Modernisation and AI-assisted development
- Use approved AI-assisted development tools to document legacy programs, accelerate code comprehension and improve maintainability.
- Use GitHub for source control, version history, branching, pull requests and code review across the DBSi codebase, bringing modern engineering discipline to a legacy environment.
- Apply AI within the development workflow to analyse, refactor and improve code quality, generate and maintain documentation, and assist with testing and defect resolution.
- Identify opportunities to simplify, consolidate or retire legacy code and contribute to the longer-term modernisation roadmap.
- Help reduce reliance on third-party legacy support by progressively bringing knowledge and capability in-house.
- Contribute to the analysis and documentation work that supports company's future ERP convergence direction.
Quality, governance and collaboration
- Follow change management, version control, testing and release governance for all production changes.
- Work closely with business analysts, systems analysts, data engineers and business stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable solutions.
- Provide effort estimates, technical advice and options to the Business Systems Lead to support planning and prioritisation.
- Participate in code review and knowledge sharing to lift the capability of the wider DBSi team.
Who we are looking for?
Essential
- Demonstrated COBOL development experience on the IBM i (AS/400 / iSeries) platform.
- Working knowledge of CL (Control Language) and the IBM i operating environment, including job scheduling, libraries and the integrated file system.
- Experience with DB2 for i and embedded or stand-alone SQL, including SQLRPGLE and DDS.
- Ability to read, interpret and safely modify a large, long-lived production codebase with limited original documentation.
- Willingness and aptitude to work with AI-assisted development tools and GitHub to manage, document and improve code, regardless of prior exposure to a legacy environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a disciplined, test-first approach to changes in a business-critical system.
- Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical matters to non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable
- Hands-on experience using GitHub (branching, pull requests, code review) and AI-assisted coding tools to analyse, document and improve a codebase.
- RPG (RPGLE / free-format) development experience.
- Exposure to SQL Server and T-SQL, and to data integration or change-data-capture pipelines.
- Familiarity with modern development practices such as automated testing and CI/CD as applied to IBM i.
- Experience in an equipment dealership, distribution, supply chain or industrial business.
- Awareness of ERP modernisation and the Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Caterpillar dealer system landscape.
What success looks like?
- DBSi changes are delivered safely, on time and with minimal production disruption.
- Legacy programs are progressively documented, reducing key-person risk and external dependency.
- Incidents are resolved at root cause rather than repeatedly patched.
- The developer actively contributes to modernisation and AI-assisted improvement rather than only maintaining the status quo.
