ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a senior backend-heavy engineer who can operate with very little handholding and contribute from day one. This is not a role for someone who needs close management or time to ramp into large-scale payments concepts.

The ideal candidate has experience in high-scale fintech/payment systems, preferably from Paystack or Flutterwave, and would ideally have worked on payment infrastructure, transaction systems, or payout/settlement workflows. Experience with Stripe, especially Stripe Connect, is a major bonus.

This person should be strong enough to take ownership of an area, make sound technical decisions, move quickly with AI tooling, and deliver independently in a startup environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Build and maintain backend systems for high-scale payment and transaction flows
• Design and implement backend services using TypeScript, Node.js, and NestJS
• Work with PostgreSQL for transactional and business-critical data
• Build and maintain integrations with Stripe APIs, ideally including Stripe Connect
• Contribute to scalable distributed backend architecture and service design
• Work across cloud environments, primarily AWS, with some exposure to GCP
• Collaborate with clients and internal stakeholders, with strong communication and ownership
• Use AI development tools effectively to accelerate engineering output without sacrificing quality
• Operate with a high level of autonomy: understand requirements, propose solutions, estimate effort, and execute

Ideal ProfileStrong Preference

• 7+ years of backend/full-stack experience
• At least 2 years at Paystack or Flutterwave
• Experience in large-scale fintech systems
• Experience handling high transaction volume and backend systems that support millions of dollars in processing

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS Backend (Must-Have)

Database

• Comfortable with designing and maintaining transactional systems

Cloud

• AWS preferred
• ECS
• SQS
• S3
• general AWS ecosystem familiarity
• GCP is also used, so some familiarity is helpful

Frontend (Secondary / Nice-to-Have but valuable)

• React
• TypeScript
• This is a backend-heavy role, but some full-stack ability is useful

AI Tooling

• Must be highly effective with AI coding tools
• Preferred tools:
• Cursor
• Claude
• Open to other tools if the engineer is already highly productive with them
• The expectation is that the engineer already knows how to use AI well in day-to-day development
