6 South is a 22-bed acuity adaptable unit at Butterworth Hospital that is capable of managing both non ICU and ICU status patients admitted with advanced cardiopulmonary care needs. 6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula.

6 Meijer Heart Center (6 Heart) is a 46-bed cardiac and vascular progressive/stepdown unit at the Meijer Heart Center. The primary patient population served include patients with various cardiac and vascular diseases requiring medical, procedural, or surgical interventions. This includes acute coronary syndrome, acute myocardial infarction, post-percutaneous coronary intervention, peripheral artery disease, renal artery disease, aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease and heart rhythm disorders.

About the unit
Butterworth Hospital’s second floor is home to the Surgical Services department which houses the Outpatient Center (OPC), Surgical Intake, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and the Hansen-Balk Surgical Family Waiting Lounge (SFWL). We strive to create a calm and healing environment for our patients and their loved ones. Team members who are working in OPC will complete the preoperative admission process, ensuring the patient has met all safety requirements for surgery and is ready for the rest of the surgical team to greet them. Upon completion of surgery, the PACU will provide phase 1 recovery for these patients. The acuity of these patients can range from same day discharge to ICU level. Our unit is a fast-paced area where your critical thinking skills are sure to grow. Our team is comprised of registered nurses, nursing technicians, unit secretaries, and waiting room coordinators who are trained to seamlessly help transition our patients and their loved ones safely through our surgical spaces.

About this unit
The Corewell Health Butterworth OR department is a level 1 trauma center. The department consists of twenty-one (21) operating rooms that operate 24/7 including supporting other surgical services departments related to IMRI and pediatric areas. The surgical team covers multiple specialties with a focus on trauma, orthopedic trauma, acute care surgery and neurological trauma. Our interdisciplinary team of anesthesia providers, physicians, nurses, surgical technicians, and support technicians offer a high level of expertise and patient care. 6 Heart nurses are skilled in peritoneal dialysis, utilization of Endotool for continuous insulin drip management, and hemodynamic monitoring with arterial lines. 6 Heart is a great unit to grow and develop as a nurse. About the unit
2 South is a 41-bed Orthopedic/Progressive unit at Butterworth Hospital. 2 South cares for medical patients as well as some surgical patients. As a team member on 2 South, you will see a wide variety of patients. Some of those diagnoses include Orthopedic Trauma, Ortho Oncology, Hip & Spine Fractures, Spine Surgery, where the other population is Progressive Care and Med/Surg overflow. These diagnoses can be anything from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Pneumonia, Sepsis, Congestive Heart Failure, Respiratory Failure, Cardiac Drips, Bi pap as well as Post Op heart ablation and pacemaker replacement patients. Teamwork is what keeps 2 South thriving. They rely on each other to get through shifts and keep their staff united. The department consists of twenty-one (21) operating rooms that operate 24/7 including supporting other surgical services departments related to IMRI and pediatric areas. The surgical team covers multiple specialties with a focus on trauma, orthopedic trauma, acute care surgery and neurological trauma. Our interdisciplinary team of anesthesia providers, physicians, nurses, surgical technicians, and support technicians offer a high level of expertise and patient care. We also support a high level of technology including the DaVinci, Rosa, and Stealth robotic equipment. The environment offers a strong team atmosphere with comprehensive technology for safe and efficient patient care.

Scope of work
Assists in the preparation, delivery, and clean-up of patient care during the intra-operative phase. Contributes to the smooth operation of the unit. Obtains and organizes necessary equipment, sterile supplies, and instruments for each surgical case. Assembles surgical supplies for rooms and case tables. Opens sterile supplies for surgical procedures. Cleans equipment (including decontamination and sterilization of instruments), work areas and reusable supplies and returns unneeded equipment to appropriate department. Also follows-up on equipment needing repairs.

The primary patient population served include patients with various cardiac and vascular diseases requiring medical, procedural, or surgical interventions. 6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, or Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula. Individuals are drawn to 6 South as it is a unique environment that allows new grad nurses the opportunity to build a strong foundation in time management and develop their critical thinking skills in non-ICU assignments, while also providing an introduction into ICU level of care. Specifically, the nurses are trained to manage continuous vasoactive infusions, pulmonary artery catheters, radial arterial lines, central venous catheters, peritoneal dialysis and utilization of Endotool for continuous Insulin drip therapy.
