Contract: This is a permanent position Cross Cover: N/A Leave Group: Managed within Critical Care Doctors Support: Internal: Head of Clinical Services, Clinical Manager, Clinical Governance Lead Doctor, Research Lead Paramedic, Operations Manager, HEMS Delivery Manager, PHEM Fellows, Patient Services Auditor, Operations Director External: Acute Hospitals, Plymouth University SUMMARY A Critical Care Doctor is a Registered Medical Practitioner with the General Medical Council with contemporaneous experience of working in critical care providing Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine role, preferably as part of a HEMS Service. Working from our Exeter and Eaglescott Airbases, their patient care, teaching and mentoring responsibilities will help ensuring the safe, effective, caring and responsive delivery of our clinical service. For every patient they encounter, they deliver high quality, safe, effective and compassionate pre-hospital clinical care as part of a team responding on our Air Ambulance helicopters, or on a Critical Care Car, in accordance with Devon Air Ambulance Trading Company Limited (DAATCL)s policies and procedures. By supporting research and audit they will provide support to the Clinical Leadership Team in developing our service, and through delivery of education, practice supervision and facilitation of Clinical Governance, they will ensure our clinical team are safe, effective and current in their practice. RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Communications and relationships Work within established and ad-hoc multi-disciplinary teams. Communicate and contextulise highly complex and highly sensitive information. Maintain patient confidentiality whilst ensuring patient treatment needs are met. Comply with DAATCLs Information Governance policy and procedures and the General Data Protection Regulations. Communicate reassurance and empathy in situations which are time pressured and emotionally demanding. Manage conflict or opposing views sensitively but promptly to ensure high quality patient care. Participate in reflection and learning within a team environment, highlighting and sharing aspects where improvement can be made. Provide accurate written accounts of incidents when requested. Participate in regular 1:1 meetings with their Line Manager. Communicate and interact across DAA departments. Be an ambassador for Devon Air Ambulance, maintaining public relations and promoting the service. Knowledge and experience Contemporaneous experience of working in a critical care role providing Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine, preferably as part of a HEMS Service. Detailed knowledge of current JRCALC Clinical Practice Guidelines followed by HCPC Registered paramedics. Evidence of current Continual Professional Development (CPD) with associated learning undertaken. Understanding of a wide range of work procedures and practices, some of which are non-routine. Excellent working knowledge of CQC Key Lines of Enquiries and their implication on clinician practice. Training/Qualifications General Medical Council Registered Medical Practitioner. Professional prehospital qualifications e.g. Dip IMC / FIMC or close equivalent. Full UK driving licence with a maximum of 3 penalty points. Willingness to undertake statutory training and any professional development as deemed appropriate by the organisation. Planning and organisational skills Plan and evaluate patient treatment, extrication and transportation requirements. Systematically and objectively weighs evidence and considers range of possibilities when solving problems. Support the Head of Clinical Services reviewing and evaluating the clinical aspects of our service. Plan education sessions for our team and key stakeholders both internally and in collaboration with Higher Education establishments. Creative and intellectual effort Reflect and evaluate on operational challenges and consider alternative options. Identify own CPD requirements and ensure maintenance of all qualifications and competencies Emotional effort Frequent exposure to highly distressing and traumatic circumstances. Requirement to treat and/or communicate with relatives of severely injured or deceased patients. Hot debriefing of operational members of the team following their participation in demanding or emotionally challenging incidents. Hosting of airbase visits from patients and their relatives. Physical skills and effort Frequent requirement for the manual handling and movement of patients including the use of specialised equipment. Frequent requirement for the use of fine motor skills during patient treatment. Must be able to swim at least 200m. Accountability, autonomy and judgement Accountable as a registered professional with the GMC for upholding the standards detailed within the GMCs Good Medical Practice guidance. Accountable for maintaining the personal qualifications required for the role. Accountable for maintaining personal awareness of organisational communications, policies and procedures through our Centrik management system. Accountable at airbase level for the ordering, storage, and audit of doctor only Controlled Drugs, ensuring compliance with legislation and DAATCL policy and procedures. Demonstrates sound judgement in reviewing clinical records and practice and considering where patient harm may have occurred and escalate to the Head of Clinical Services where appropriate. Financial, physical and information resources Accurate completion of patient clinical records/clinical database. Accurate recording of operational activity. Responsible for handling and operating medical and aircraft equipment in accordance with training and procedures. Responsible for the delivery of enhanced and critical care provision in accordance with: Statutory requirements Regulatory requirements DAATCL policy and procedures Policy and service Support the Head of Clinical Services and Clinical Governance Lead Doctor in reviewing proposed clinical/equipment trials/evaluations and highlight any concerns from a Critical Care delivery perspective. Supports research and audit in relation to the clinical delivery of DAATCLs service and liaises with the Senior Consultant where evidence suggests changes in care. Working conditions Works clinical shifts up to 12 hours in duration covering the full 24 hour period, including during the hours of darkness, within the organisations rostering system. Works in confined spaces, high and low temperatures, as well as adverse weather conditions such as rain and snow. Leadership and people Supports the Clinical Manager in providing feedback on clinical performance of Critical Care paramedics. Provide mentorship and support to the Critical Care Doctors. Requirement to lead ad-hoc teams on scene of an incident when less experienced clinical staff are present. Provides positive support to all members of the operational members of the team and ensures myths are busted and accurate representation of the organisations vision, mission and values and strategic direction. Undertake on average a minimum of 2 operational Critical Care Doctor shifts per month.
