The Aviation Innovation Research (AIR) Lab

The joint CAAS-Thales innovation lab known as ‘AIR Lab’ started to operate on 1st November 2019 with the objective to develop Proof of Concepts (POCs) or Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) of advanced and open technologies for future Air Traffic Management (ATM). Currently, the joint lab employs a team of 40 Thales engineers and 12 CAAS engineers and air traffic controllers operating in a vibrant ecosystem involving a number of Singaporean SMEs and start-ups, as well as key research institutes.

Thales engineers include 10 domain experts – with more than 10 years of experience – coming from Thales ATM centres of competence in France and Australia. These experts are coaching both the local Thales and CAAS engineers.

The POCs and MVPs are co-developed with the CAAS engineers who have access to the same development tools and environment used by the Thales Engineers (provided by the Singapore branch of Thales Digital Factory). The POCs and MVPs are defined in collaboration with CAAS air traffic controllers through iterative workshops.

AIR Lab research outcomes will feed the next generation of products, including clearly disruptive outcomes addressing Safety and Security for Open architecture, data driven ATM Twin, Green Aviation, Trajectory Based Operations.

As the AIR Lab was recently extended for another 3 years, 4 work streams are now embarked:

Regional Experimental Platform, FF-ICE/TBO, Green Aviation, Future-proof Interoperable Platform-Agnostic, Safe and Secure Platforms.

AIR Lab 2.0 continues to benefit from research conducted in Europe through new architecture research which, among other objectives, aims at meeting much stricter safety standards for ground ATM systems in development by the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA). This breakthrough architecture study is co-funded by the French government (CASSIOPEA).

Regional Experimental Platform (REP) has been initiated in AIR Lab 1.0, and has the view to addressing regional needs in coordination with the SESAR 3 activities conducted in AMS France.

Job Duties

• Design, develop and test applications from scratch
• Drive requirement analysis, conceptive design, and formulation of architecture, implementation, system integration, testing, documentation and deployment of mobile applications.
• Create Android / IOS user interface which could work in both mobile and tablet devices.

Skills & Requirements

Main responsibilities

In close interaction with the projects stakeholders, you will be accountable for:

• Research, design, and develop software.

- Analyse user needs and develop software solutions

• The design and implementation a greenfield solution according the functional specifications in a latest Java technologies framework and React framework
• The preparation, planning and execution of the roll-out from support to production services. The goal is to obtain a smooth roll-out of the application to different sites.
• Update software, enhances existing software capabilities, and develops and direct software testing and validation procedures.
• Work with other engineers to integrate hardware and/or software systems

- Close collaboration with the technical lead/Architect in order to elaborate technical specifications.

• Develop specifications and performance requirements.

- Drafting specifications, technical design, unit tests, code reviews and detailed system integration documents, additionally to any other documents required during the project lifecycle.

• Contributions to help maintaining a high standard of delivery quality
• Enable and support functional and user acceptance testing
• Perform non-functional testing
• Active participation in the analysis and resolving of issues when application will in production, and to provide technical support in case of need.

Qualifications and Profile

At least a Bachelor’s degree in any of these faculties:
Computer Science / Information Technology / Programming & Systems Analysis / Science (Computer Studies)

This position requires a minimum of 8+ years of relevant experiences in Java-J2EE software engineering, ideally in a banking environment coupled with experiences in ReactJS/UI as huge advantages.

Functional

• Payments/banking industry knowledge is strong plus.
• Knowledge of Cash Management systems is a strong plus – e.g. ISO20022, Payments flow, etc.

Technical

• Minimum 8+ years experience in web and stand-alone application design & development with latest Java/JEE technologies in Unix environment.
• Excellent understanding and practical experience of Spring Frameworks (IOC, Spring Boot, Spring Batch, Spring Integration, Spring Security etc.).
• Good understanding and practical experience on Docker, CI/CD and Kubernetes.
• Strong knowledge and practical experience of Micro services architecture.
• Practical knowledge of Jenkins, Maven, Master Deploy.
• Strong knowledge of source code management tools such as Git, Svn
• Excellent knowledge of messaging systems like IBM MQ, HornetQ, RabbitMQ
• Practical experience on JavaScript technologies such as Angular 5/6, VueJs, Aurelia / Durandal or ReactJS.
• Proven experience on quality code deliverables and working with platforms like Sonarqube
• Practical experience on working with application servers like Jboss, Jetty, Webphere.
• Solution design using proven patterns, awareness of anti-patterns, performance tuning
