About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator to join the Data Engineering team of a US-based client. This role has two main responsibilities: acting as a Data Manager working with multiple data engineers and alongside the Head of Data, and serving as an individual contributor managing, scaling, and optimizing our database infrastructure hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in GCP-native databases, a strong background in automating database provisioning using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and the architectural knowledge to guide engineering teams in their database selection.

Key Responsibilities:

Database Management:

- Provision, configure, and manage GCP databases, primarily focusing on Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL), Cloud Spanner, and Firestore.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

- Automate database deployments, updates, and scaling operations using Terraform.

Architecture & Advisory:

- Partner closely with software engineering teams during the design phase to evaluate their specific use cases and help them choose the right database technology (relational, NoSQL, or distributed SQL).

Query Optimization:

- Proactively analyze query execution plans, identify performance bottlenecks, and work hands-on with developers to optimize complex queries and improve overall database efficiency.

Reliability & High Availability:

- Design and implement robust backup, restore, and disaster recovery (DR) strategies.

- Ensure high availability and multi-region resilience (especially for Cloud Spanner).

Security & Compliance:

- Implement and enforce database security best practices, managing IAM roles, encryption (at rest and in transit), and auditing access.
