Solid experience, good team, some room for improvement

Working as a Financial Analyst in the New York, NY office provided solid experience in the financial services industry. The role offered good exposure to complex projects and a collaborative team environment, though there were occasional bureaucratic hurdles typical of a large financial institution.

Pros

The team I worked with was fantastic – really supportive and knowledgeable colleagues made the day-to-day enjoyable. I learned a lot about commercial banking operations and gained valuable analytical skills. The hybrid work model offered a decent balance, allowing for some flexibility while maintaining in-office collaboration.

Cons

There's a noticeable amount of bureaucracy which can sometimes slow down decision-making and project execution. Communication between departments could also be more streamlined. While the pay is competitive for the market, the benefits package could be more robust to match some competitors.

Advice to Management

Consider streamlining internal processes and enhancing the benefits package to further boost employee satisfaction and retention. More cross-departmental collaboration initiatives would be beneficial.

Good training ground for finance careers, but expect long hours
Pros: The training and development here are strong, especially for junior roles in the banking sector. You get to work on interesting M&A and capital markets transactions. The people are generally smart and dedicated, and there's a real sense of teamwork when you need to push through a difficult project. Senior bankers are often accessible for guidance.
Cons: The work-life balance is definitely challenging, with frequent late nights and weekend work expected, which is typical for investment banking but still tough. Compensation could be more competitive compared to top-tier bulge bracket firms.
Advice to Management: Focus on improving work-life balance initiatives without sacrificing deal quality or training.

Good team and learning, but strategy could be clearer
Pros: The people I worked with were genuinely great – smart, helpful, and always willing to lend a hand. The collaboration within my immediate team made tackling complex financial modeling and analysis in the banking sector much more manageable. I learned a lot about the nuances of the financial services industry. There's a decent amount of flexibility in how you structure your workday, especially if you're in a hybrid role. Leadership, for the most part, was accessible and offered guidance when
Cons: Sometimes the broader company strategy or departmental priorities weren't communicated as clearly as I would have liked, leading to some confusion or rework. This could make long-term project planning a bit less predictable than ideal.
Advice to Management: Improve clarity on long-term strategic goals and departmental priorities.

Meaningful projects, but bureaucratic processes slowed things down.
Pros: The best part of working at CIBC US was definitely the people and the interesting projects. My team was incredibly supportive and smart, and we collaborated well to tackle complex analytical challenges within the banking and financial services industry. I learned a lot about data modeling and financial reporting. The work itself was engaging, and I felt like I was contributing to something impactful.
Cons: My main constructive feedback would be around operational efficiency. Sometimes, internal approval processes and bureaucratic layers felt a bit slow, which could impact project timelines and agility. While not a deal-breaker, this often meant we couldn't move as fast as we might have liked on certain initiatives.
Advice to Management: Streamline approval workflows to improve project agility and responsiveness.
