Solid Engineering, But Culture Needs Work

Rolls-Royce offers amazing opportunities in advanced engineering, especially for aerospace professionals. You'll work with bright minds on big projects. However, be ready for a very traditional, bureaucratic corporate environment that can slow things down and limit flexibility.


Pros

It's a huge name in aerospace engineering, so you get to work on some truly impressive projects. As a project manager, I learned a lot from very smart people. There's definitely a sense of pride in the brand.


Cons

The corporate culture can feel very old-school and rigid. Decision-making is really slow, often bogged down in bureaucracy. There isn't much work flexibility, and adapting to new ideas is tough here.


Advice to Management

Modernize processes, empower teams more, and embrace new ways of working. Encourage more agile thinking across all departments to improve project delivery times and employee morale.

Solid Job Security for Engineers, But Slow Pace
Pros: Job security is definitely a big pro here, especially working in aerospace manufacturing. They're a corporate giant, so layoffs aren't super common. The benefits package is pretty decent too.
Cons: Career progression can feel pretty slow at times. For a software engineer in the Derby, UK office, moving up requires a lot of patience. Sometimes it feels like bureaucracy slows everything down.

Okay Flexibility for Aerospace Engineers
Pros: Some teams offer hybrid work, which is nice. As a manufacturing engineer, I could sometimes adjust my hours if a project needed it, especially if I'd been on site a lot. The company is huge, so there's always support if you need it within the aerospace industry.
Cons: They're pretty set on 3 days in the office for most people, even for roles that don't need it. Remote work isn't really a long-term option in the Indianapolis office. It's tough to get true flexibility if your manager isn't on board.
Advice to Management: Trust your employees more with how they get the job done. Not every engineering role needs strict office presence. Loosen up on the mandatory office days, especially for those of us not directly on the production floor.

Solid engineering, tough corporate culture
Pros: Job security is pretty solid, especially working in the defense and aerospace industry. You get to work on some truly impressive jet engines and complex engineering challenges. The onsite teams in Indianapolis are really knowledgeable and supportive, which helps a lot.
Cons: The company culture feels very hierarchical and slow to change. As a Manufacturing Engineer, getting approvals for new tools or process improvements can take ages, which is frustrating. It doesn't always feel like innovation is a priority, and work-life balance can be hit or miss depending on the project.
Advice to Management: Management needs to really focus on streamlining internal processes and empowering teams. Encourage more risk-taking and faster decision-making to modernize the corporate culture. Listen to the feedback from onsite engineering and manufacturing staff.
