About The Role

Huawei Canada is seeking an experienced and innovative Machine Learning Engineer to join our Human-Machine Interaction Lab. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of renewable energy forecasting and digital twin development, contributing to sustainable energy solutions through advanced machine learning techniques. The successful candidate will develop and deploy models that support solar and wind power forecasting, enabling real-time operations and long-term energy planning. They will also build data-driven components for digital twin platforms, including real-time simulation, weather scenario analysis, and performance diagnostics. Collaboration across multidisciplinary teams is essential to deliver practical, production-ready solutions that impact the renewable energy sector. This position provides a unique chance to work on impactful projects that combine data science, engineering, and domain expertise to advance sustainable energy technologies.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Energy Systems, or Electrical Engineering.
• Strong foundation in machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling techniques.
• Proficiency in Python programming and familiarity with modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch; experience with TensorFlow is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with computer vision, image and video processing, remote sensing imagery, and vision transformer architectures.
• Knowledge of physics-informed learning, including integrating physical constraints into neural models and hybrid modeling approaches.
• Proven ability to work with real-world industrial sensor data and develop robust forecasting pipelines.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, strong communication abilities, and a collaborative mindset to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
  
  

Responsibilities

• Develop, train, and deploy machine learning models tailored for renewable energy forecasting, supporting both operational and strategic decision-making.
• Create and maintain data-driven components for digital twin platforms, including real-time generation simulation, weather-driven scenario analysis, and anomaly detection.
• Work with diverse data sources such as SCADA systems, meteorological measurements, satellite imagery, sky-imager videos, and plant metadata to inform model development.
• Collaborate with engineering, research, and product teams to translate research insights into scalable, production-ready solutions.
• Continuously evaluate model performance, optimize algorithms, and implement improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
• Document methodologies, results, and best practices to facilitate knowledge sharing within the team and organization.
