The York Region District School Board (YRDSB) Museum & Archives is seeking a Museum Programs Development Intern (Young Canada Works) to support the research, development, and delivery of culturally responsive and curriculum-aligned educational programming. This role contributes to the Museum’s ongoing efforts to decolonize its programming and elevate diverse local histories.

The Intern will support the continued implementation of No. 2 Construction Battalion resources, including the launch of a new outreach exhibit and education kit developed in collaboration with families and descendants of Battalion members. This work will align with the mandatory Ontario curriculum expectations for Grades 7, 8, and 10. The Intern will also contribute to the research and co-production of a collaborative exhibition and educational initiative, and continue to research and integrate York Region women’s histories, particularly women’s contributions during and following the World Wars, into Museum programming and collections.
The ideal candidate will be aligned with YRDSB’s commitment to disrupting systemic racism and advancing the recommendations of the Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy and the Indigenous Education and Equity Strategy. They will demonstrate strong research and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with primary sources. The candidate must be an empathetic and effective communicator, both orally and in writing. Work will take place at the Museum, in the community, and occasionally remotely, requiring flexibility based on program and system needs.
Major Responsibilities
- Conduct primary research at local museums, archives and other cultural institutions, specifically researching local histories and personal stories, with a specific focus on local previously underrepresented histories.
- Meet and collaborate with YRDSB Museum & Archives staff to determine the implementation of the new No.2 Construction Battalion Education Kit. Ensure that the final resources and objectives align with the new mandatory Ontario Black History curriculum expectations (to be released).
- Produce new resources, such as teacher inquiry packs from research, through an anti-racist and anti-oppression lens.
- Co-plan and co-create with teachers, curriculum consultants, the FNMI team and administrators as to the scope and content of the research.
- Assist with project administrative tasks and assignments which may include: monitoring and responding to phone and email queries, scheduling, and liaising with teachers.
- Lead and engage with students during in-person and outreach teaching of the Museum & Archives programming.
- Work as an active member of the Museum & Archives team.
- Attend meetings and other professional development sessions/training as required.
- To perform other duties as assigned, which may include the organization and cataloging of artifacts and archival materials.
Qualifications
- Be a graduate from a post-secondary institution, with a degree in history, public history, museum studies or a related field.
- A strong interest in education/museum programming and working with students.
- Have excellent English verbal and written communication skills. French is an asset.
- Have effective computer skills with standards such as Word, Excel and Google Suite, but also good skills with social media. Familiarity with collections management software is an asset.
- Be detail oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable working as part of a small team.
- Prior experience with historic research in museums, libraries and archives strongly preferred.
- Have a valid Drivers Licence and access to a vehicle
- As required by the YCW-BCH grant requirements, the Intern must be between 16 to 30 years of age at the start of the internship, are a college or university graduate, are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible); and are legally entitled to work in Canada with a valid social insurance number. Priority will be given to graduates who have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.

Important Information For CUPE 1734 Members
LA.11.7 Those twelve (12) month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve (12) months at their position.
