Mikelle Search Group has partnered with a growing, entrepreneurial organization in the real estate and home building sector to recruit a Financial Controller.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced finance professional who is looking for interesting, meaningful work with significant flexibility.

Our client is very open-minded about what the right structure looks like for the right person. The position could be structured as full-time or part-time depending on the successful candidate's experience and skillset, with a hybrid work environment and significant flexibility around working hours.

The successful candidate will work closely with an entrepreneurial executive team and have exposure to a diverse and growing portfolio of residential, purpose-built rental and other real estate projects.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys being hands-on while also providing strategic financial insight and wants the ability to help shape the finance function as the organization continues to grow.

The Role:

The Financial Controller will oversee the financial requirements of the business, with responsibility for day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, job costing, inventory control, budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.

The role will also support project financing, lender relationships, housing funding programs, and the continued development of financial systems and processes.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Monthly P&L, balance sheet and cash flow reporting and analysis
• Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow planning
• WIP reporting, job costing and project financial analysis
• Oversight of AR/AP, payroll-by-job, reconciliations and month-end close
• Monitoring project costs, margins, invoices, change orders, progress billings and holdbacks
• Oversight of inventory valuation, purchasing controls, vendor terms and related processes
• Developing and implementing strong internal controls and financial workflows
• Providing oversight and support to bookkeeping personnel
• Supporting CMHC and other housing funding applications, compliance requirements, draws and reporting
• Supporting bank and lender relationships and preparing financing packages
• Providing financial insight to the executive team around projects, growth opportunities, risk and decision-making
• Improving financial reporting, systems and processes as the organization continues to scale
• Leveraging technology, automation and AI to improve reporting, forecasting, document review and data analysis

The ideal candidate will bring:

• CPA, CGA, CMA or equivalent designation
• 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
• Experience in construction, home building, real estate development or a similar project-based environment
• Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP and project financials
• Strong budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management experience
• Ability to oversee bookkeeping/accounting resources while remaining hands-on when required
• Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills
• Experience with accounting, ERP or construction management systems
• Strong communication skills and the ability to translate financial information into clear business insights
• An entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to improve processes, systems and technology

Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:

• CMHC financing and housing funding programs
• Purpose-built rental or affordable housing
• First Nations housing projects
• Real estate development, home building or construction experience
• Fractional CFO or Controller experience within an entrepreneurial or growing organization
• AI-enabled finance and reporting tools
