About The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer at BMO, you will assume a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining complex, enterprise-grade applications and services. This position requires a hands-on technical leader responsible for designing, developing, and owning solutions that are secure, scalable, and aligned with business objectives within a modern cloud and microservices ecosystem. You will lead end-to-end technical design efforts, guide teams through ambiguity, and ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions that meet stringent security and performance standards. This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership and mentorship, emphasizing accountability for solution quality and operational excellence.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of six years of professional software development experience, complemented by a relevant post-secondary degree or equivalent practical knowledge. Strong communication skills are essential to articulate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience in delivering production systems within large, complex enterprise environments is required, with a preference for banking or financial services experience. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in modern programming languages and frameworks, cloud platforms, and AI-enabled development tools, alongside a solid understanding of responsible AI practices and enterprise security standards.
Responsibilities
- Own the design, development, and ongoing maintenance of complex applications or services, ensuring technical quality, resiliency, and optimal performance.
- Lead comprehensive technical design processes, translating business requirements into scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.
- Develop applications using Java and Spring Boot within a microservices and cloud-native architecture framework.
- Support application integrations utilizing APIs, MQ, Kafka, and SFTP, with proficiency in RESTful services, JSON, and XML.
- Design and optimize data solutions leveraging Oracle SQL to meet business needs.
- Utilize AI-assisted tools to analyze large or complex codebases, identify technical debt, and evaluate cross-system impacts during modernization initiatives.
- Apply AI technologies to accelerate solution design, architecture evaluation, prototyping, and testing strategies.
- Leverage AI during complex production issue analysis, incident triage, and root cause investigations to enhance system reliability and reduce resolution times.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues, leading root cause analysis efforts and implementing sustainable fixes.
- Establish and enforce engineering standards related to code quality, security, testing, and SDLC best practices.
- Provide technical mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers, fostering best practices in coding, solution design, testing, and responsible AI usage.
- Guide teams through technical ambiguity, helping define strategic directions, trade-offs, and implementation approaches.
- Collaborate closely with business partners, architects, and product teams to ensure solutions align with strategic priorities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by refining engineering processes, tools, and delivery practices.
