Predicting Debt Crisis with Artificial Intelligence and Real-Time Big Data, an inter-disciplinary project funded by the Asian Institute of Digital Finance, is looking for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow. The Principal Investigators of this project are at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and NUS School of Computing. The candidate will oversee day-to-day activities and the general management of assigned research projects.

These responsibilities include:
• Conducting academic research on topics related to artificial intelligence, macro finance, and interdisciplinary topics.
• Integrating existing literature to propose research ideas and hypotheses, develop and implement empirical analysis using various statistical software. Methodologies used include machine learning, regression discontinuities, difference-in-difference analyses, among others.
• Working with team members to extract, process, and filter information from various text resources and construct new datasets.
• Processing, cleaning, and merging datasets (e.g., using R, Python, Stata, SPSS, and/or SAS).

Having witnessed the achievements of the large models in 2023, there has been a new surge of machine learning and AI models in recent days, which again puts up the public concerns about the explosively increasing energy consumption during the model training phase. According to Dr. Sajjad Moazeni, an AI researcher at University of Washington, the training of GPT-3 roughly consumes 10 gigawatt-hour of electricity ^([1]), approximately equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of 440,000 average Singapore households in 2021 ^([2]).

Significant efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiency of the model training phase, in terms of hardware, model architecture, networking, and algorithm design, etc. The PI (Dr. Zhang Junyu) of this project would like to tackle this problem from the algorithmic perspective, by developing theoretical understanding of the open questions on the training algorithms, in terms of the convergence, complexity, local landscape properties, and potential algorithmic improvement based on the new theoretical findings.

Experience : PhD with >5 years of relevant work experiences; MSc/MEng with >8 years of relevant work experiences; Good Honors degree with >10 years of relevant experience & good track record in product development.

To assist with the implementation and maintenance of efficient office management systems and procedures to enable our team to optimise their standards of service. This will require effective time management, arranging and preparation and maintenance of correspondence and reports, manipulation of documentation management systems and general workflow tasks. To support team members with research funding applications. This will require undertaking appropriate staff training and development as required, confidently providing cross-cover on a reciprocal basis in the absence of colleagues. Searching for funding and development opportunities and providing support to new and existing researchers is a core element of being effective in this role. To use initiative and work to standard operating procedures and working instructions to meet essential work requirements and to achieve accurate data capture from researchers in relation to research funding applications, research outputs and other metrics according to reporting requirements. This will require being able to learn and maintain the best practices in the capture of technical, scientific and research data and metrics, being flexible to changing needs.
