About the role

Our Assurance & Advisory Division offer a full suite of capabilities to our clients, including external audit, internal audit, risk management and IT advisory. With 9 Partners and a large team nationally, we have specialists in all streams and service private and public sector clients within a range of industries.

Working under the supervision of more experienced team members you will be responsible for assisting in the planning, delegation and performance of a range of external audit reviews. You will have the opportunity to build relationships with clients and continuously develop your technical and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

1. To prepare neat, concise and complete working papers for audit testing, including conclusions for all sections. The scope of testing will include transaction testing at the interim audit visit and audit testing of all areas of the statement of financial position at the final audit visit. For smaller audit clients, the Intermediate will be expected to complete the audit testing without the supervision of an audit Senior or Manager. This will involve designing audit tests, determining the objectives of tests and completing tests that will enhance the risk based audit approach;
2. For smaller audit assignments where the Intermediate is the auditor-in-charge, they will be expected to fully complete the audit file; with special attention to the planning of the audit and completion of all outstanding matters. This includes but is not limited to the review of the financial report and completion of disclosure checklists, the management letter, letter of representation, analytical review, audit programs, concluding memorandum, drafting of the audit report, and raising the fee;
3. To identify basic audit issues during the course of performing audit testing in relation to the knowledge gained of the nature of the client’s business. It is important that the Intermediate ensures that the file is clear and easy to review with the main points adequately highlighted for the Senior or Manger’s attention;
4. To demonstrate a general understanding of the client’s business operations, needs and expectations, and to show an awareness of these factors in relation to any audit issues identified during the course of the audit testing;
5. To clear all Senior and Manager review points in relation to each audit assignment undertaken;
6. To recognise the importance of clients by delivering a high level of customer service by being willing to have discussions with clients as required and following up any client enquiries promptly and accurately;
7. To demonstrate an understanding of the importance of completing an audit assignment within budget and in accordance with any relevant deadlines;
8. To demonstrate an awareness of the planning memorandum, such that the level of audit testing conducted reflects the risks identified at the planning stage;
9. To use effective team working skills by working co-operatively with others, taking advice and feedback from Senior or Manager, and to keeping Senior or Manager informed of work in progress. The Intermediate should also demonstrate the ability to adequately delegate audit work to junior staff and to instruct them appropriately;
10. The Intermediate will have commenced study their postgraduate studies (CA or CPA) and will also be expected to develop their technical knowledge, in terms of areas such as application of Accounting and Auditing Standards in relation to audit issues identified;
11. The Intermediate will demonstrate an ability to prepare or review a statutory financial report from a client’s trial balance and complete the relevant sections of the disclosure checklist;
12. The Intermediate will be able to prepare a first draft management letter for smaller audit clients;
13. The Intermediate will be able to carry out analytical review procedures, including ratio analysis;
14. The Intermediate will demonstrate an understanding of materiality and its impact on audit work carried out;
15. The Intermediate will be required to prepare basic tax computations as part of the audit process;
16. The Intermediate will assist with research and authorship of firm publications, which include the XYZ Model Financial accounts and the Audit Manual; and
17. Other duties of the Intermediate include participation in the recruitment, training and supervision of Graduates and Co-op. This will include:

Skills and experience

Tertiary qualified with 2-3 years’ relevant experience gained in an external audit environment
Working towards or recently completed CA within the Chartered Accounting industry
Technically proficient in external audit and demonstrate a willingness to develop knowledge and skills

Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage with all levels of staff and stakeholders
