Job Description

As an Associate Data Platform Engineer at Nine, you will work in a highly collaborative environment, contributing to the development and enhancement of Nine’s Data Platform—a suite of tools designed to streamline the developer experience for our data engineering squads.

Our mission is to ensure our data engineers can focus on solving business problems rather than wrestling with tools. You will support the team in maintaining a resilient, high-scale ecosystem while learning to build platform products that are intuitive, impactful, and self-describing.

Day To Day You Will

• Feature Development & Execution: Contribute to building and enhancing data platform tools, moving from initial discovery to execution with guidance from senior engineers.
• Adoption & Support: Support data engineering squads to use platform tools efficiently. You will help unblock stakeholders, gather feedback, and assist in onboarding new users.
• Operational Excellence: Assist in managing unplanned work and tech incidents, maintaining a calm and methodical approach to service restoration.
• Continuous Learning: Actively participate in code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions to grow your technical and domain expertise.
• Security & FinOps: Apply a security-conscious mindset to your code and assist in monitoring cloud usage to find infrastructure efficiencies and optimisations.
• AI Productivity: Leverage AI tools to improve your own productivity and contribute to AI-enabling features within our platform tools.
  
  

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

Technical Foundation

• Programming: Proficiency in Python (or another language) with the ability to write clean, testable code.
• Version Control: Practical experience using Git for collaboration.
• Data Tooling: Familiarity with (or a strong desire to learn) the modern data stack, including Airflow, dbt, Airbyte, and BigQuery.
• Cloud & Infrastructure: A solid understanding of cloud fundamentals and exposure to Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  
  

Knowledge & Mindset

• CI/CD Awareness: Understanding of CI/CD pipeline principles; exposure to Docker is a plus.
• Data Fundamentals: Experience with cloud data warehouses and familiarity with SQL and data modelling concepts (e.g., relational databases or Kimball-style dimensional modelling).
• Analytical Curiosity: A proven ability to dig "under the hood" to understand how tools work and solve complex problems.
• Collaboration: Strong communication skills and empathy for the "customer" (our data engineers).
