The Role
Join Nine Mile’s Operations team in Sydney as an Operations Engineer in the Middle Office. This is a hands-on role that combines running the operational backbone of the firm with building the automated systems that backbone depends on.
You’ll sit close to the trading desk, own the systems and processes behind settlement and reconciliation, and help scale operations as we expand into new markets and products.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building, operating, and improving the automated systems the operations function depends on, including their monitoring and failure handling
- Scoping and building new tools and workflows to support the firm’s expansion into new markets and products
- Overseeing settlement across different markets, identifying exceptions in advance of failure
- Reconciling internal records against those of our clearing banks and counterparties, investigating any breaks and addressing their root cause
- Providing day-to-day support to the trading desk, resolving issues as they arise and eliminating those that recur
- Owning the reporting owed to regulators, exchanges, and counterparties
What You Will Bring
- Strong logic and systems-oriented thinking – the ability to break a problem down into its component parts and design a robust process with clear, defined steps that delivers a lasting solution
- Ownership – the desire to take responsibility for the function independently, and to drive the improvement and growth of the operational systems behind it
- Accuracy under time pressure – much of the work falls within narrow windows around the market open and close
- Clear communication – direct daily interaction with traders, our clearing bank, issuers, and exchanges
- Programming ability is an advantage but not a prerequisite – we work primarily in Python, and a demonstrated history of automating your own work in any toolset is equally relevant
- Proficiency and interest in AI and technology generally – much of our development now involves AI tools, and we expect them to be used capably and with scrutiny. More broadly, we encourage people to seek out different tools and solutions that improve how we operate
- 0–3 years’ experience preferred. Prior exposure to settlement, clearing or securities operations, advanced Excel, SQL, or Linux systems is desirable but not required. Any experience designing or automating a process, in any context, is equally useful
