ScaleUp Bio is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microbiologist to join our team. The Microbiologist will be responsible for working with fermentation scientists in developing optimized culture conditions for newly developed or existing production strains from our customers and perform a variety of tasks related to fermentation technology. These can include strain propagation, bench top and pilot scale fermentations, operation of pilot plant and laboratory equipment/instrumentation, media preparation, sample collection and analysis, and related maintenance at the lab (Biopolis) and pilot plant (Tuas), as well as the analysis on the quality equipment such as HPLC, etc.

Your Responsibilities:

• Plan and design strain screening and collection strategy and protocol for fermentation process for our customers;
• Manage cell bank construction and maintenance based on our customers strains;
• Routine microbiological testing and cell counting of fermentation samples;
• Microbial contamination testing of process samples and environmental samples;
• Take responsibility for new technical development in identification of improvement of the fermentation process together with the process engineer;
• Provide scientific and technical support in ongoing or potential collaboration projects with our customers;
• Cross-functionally collaborate with other scientists, engineers and management professionals internal and external to ScaleUp Bio;
• Responsible for the analytical lab duties (HPLC, etc.).
• Ability to develop and coordinate technology development and technology transfer programs with internal and third-party partners;
• Work with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the progress timeline in new product/process development;

Your Profile:

• Master degree with 3+ years experience Or Bachelor degree with 5+ years experience or equivalent in Microbiology or Chemistry or related field.
• Industrial experience is desired, e.g. culture strain storage management etc.
• Experience in microbial isolation, cultivation, characterization and identification, microbial physiology and/or ecology, 16S rRNA qPCR, Western blotting, and basic genetic engineering tools and analytical tools (HPLC, etc.).
• Familiarity with strain handling, microbial communities, high-throughput screenings, and fermentation.
• Demonstrating success in taking ideas to strain or process development and improvement.
• Strong communication and organization skills, be able to multi-task and exhibit a strong sense of urgency in order to accomplish daily tasks.
• Experience in collecting and analyzing data from laboratory and plant operations with statistic tools.

Purpose

Act as the site microbiology subject matter expert; provide microbiologist expertise and develop monitoring strategy and operation framework.

The Microbiology Department The Microbiology Laboratory provides a comprehensive service covering all aspects of general microbiology to the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (circa 500 beds plus Virtual Ward), Newmarket Community Hospital (33 beds) and GPs in Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding catchment area. The laboratory is located in the main West Suffolk Hospital building. The microbiology department was assessed by UKAS in December 2023 and recommended for accreditation subject to clearing the non-conformances. The evidence to demonstrate this was submitted in March 2024 and the outcome is awaited. The microbiology Laboratory Manager is Mr Marcus Milner. There are four Band 7 Biomedical Scientists who lead on Health & Safety, Quality and Training. Administrative support for the Microbiology Department, Consultants and Infection Prevention Team is provided by named members of the Pathology Administrative & Clerical team. Team-based administrative support across Pathology helps ensure demand is met regardless of holidays, sickness and any other absence. This team approach also helps with appropriate support when most needed, for example during outbreaks. Pathology uses the CliniSys WinPath Enterprise laboratory information management system and the Q-pulse quality management system. Office space containing a personal computer (with access to email, the internet and the relevant IT systems) will be provided within the West Suffolk Hospital Microbiology Department. A laptop will also be provided to facilitate remote on-call working. The Laboratory undertakes routine bacteriology, parasitology, serology and antibiotic susceptibility testing. It participates in the UKNEQAS schemes for general bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibility, faecal parasitology, mycology and appropriate viral serology. There is also an internal quality assurance scheme. There is an automated blood culture system (BioMerieux BacT/ALERT), automated urinalysis (Beckman Coulter DxU), a Bruker MALDI-TOF, Serosep EntericBio and BioMerieux BioFire FilmArray. C. difficile toxin gene testing is performed on a Cepheid GeneXpert. Rapid antigen testing is available for Norovirus. The bulk of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza testing is performed on SAMBA IIs in a designated laboratory area within the Emergency Department. Paediatrics have Roche LIAT and Lumira DX analysers for point-of-care Influenza, RSV and SARS-CoV-2 testing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing uses both the BioMerieux Vitek 2 automated system and EUCAST standardised disc methods. Gentamicin and Vancomycin assays are performed in the Biochemistry department; other antimicrobial assays are referred to the Bristol antimicrobial reference laboratory. Serological testing, including antenatal serology, is performed on a DiaSorin Liaison XL. Chlamydia & Neisseria gonorrhoeae NAATs testing is currently performed at Micropathology. Other molecular testing is performed at UKHSA Cambridge, and specialist virology advice is obtained from regional virologists. Mycobacterial culture is undertaken at a reference laboratory at present. AAFB staining is performed on site. Urgent overnight microbiology samples are transported to UKHSA Cambridge for testing at present, with a plan to repatriate this service. Abnormal results are communicated to the West Suffolk Hospital Consultant Microbiologist on call. WSFT has also been confirmed as one of 40 Trusts across the country to receive funding for a new build hospital from the Governments Health Infrastructure Programme. Planning is well underway, and the Pathology Department has a wonderful opportunity to create a purpose-built department to enable further development of a modernised service for our patients and users. The post-holder will be provided with a Trust laptop to enable remote access into the hospital and pathology computer systems.Out-of-hours infection prevention advice is provided by the on-call Consultant Microbiologist.

During start-up phase,

• Perform calibration and maintenance of Microbiology Laboratory’s equipment/instrument.
• Support Facilities, Equipment and Utilities qualification activities.
• Support technical transfer by performing method suitability as per current regulations/ SOP/ STP

1. Responsible for the analysis of RM, finished product/in-process/stability/validation/utility samples for MLT by referring current version of specification/STP/SOP with relevant product code.
2. Responsible for the analysis of water samples by referring current version of specification/STP/SOP with relevant code, based on of monthly schedule.
3. Responsible for the analysis samples of EMP by referring current version of SOP.
4. Perform identification of microorganism isolate by microscopy.
5. Perform the assay test as per STP/SOP by Microbiological method.
6. Check the sample integrity with respect to labelling, container, packing, time point, sampling point, etc., along with availability of reagent/chemical/media as per STP/SOP and within the validity.
7. Preparation of all microbiological media/diluent/sample as per SOP/GP.
8. Ensure maintenance, review and availability of media/cultures and miscellaneous materials.
9. Ensure implementation of SOP for all corresponding activities.
10. Ensure real time documentation.
11. . Maintain data integrity and appropriate traceability.
12. Responsible for checking all results in LIMS and reporting of any observed results that do not meet the requirement (OOS/OOT/Deviation) for further investigation.
13. Responsible for preventive maintenance and calibration of microbiological lab instrument as per calendar.
14. Responsible for microbiology lab and equipment/instrument cleanliness.
15. Responsible for procuring and receipt of microbiology glassware and consumables.
16. Preserve all sample media petri plates till the completion and confirmation of results.
17. Responsible for disposition of samples upon confirmation.
18. Adhere to user privileges allotted to the job.
19. Any other activities as and when assigned by the Superior.

COMPLIANCE AND QUALITY:

• Good understanding of safe working practices and cGMP.
• A good team player with positive learning attitude.
• Microsoft savvy with good interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Degree / Diploma in Science related discipline.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in a pharmaceutical environment.
