The Opportunity:
The Safety Specialist I for radiation safety acts as an expert resource for the university community on radiation and laser safety. The specialist contributes to the university's radiation safety program by developing, implementing, and assessing its effectiveness. This specialist plays a key role in preventing radiation exposure and contamination through administering surveys, training personnel, and inspecting labs. The Safety Specialist also ensures compliance with regulations by managing waste, records, and assisting with emergency responses.
Responsibilities:
Performs monthly contamination surveys to laboratories with radioactive materials.
Run samples in the Liquid Scintillation Counter.
Conduct sampling and leak tests of General License Devices.
Performs compliance inspections and accomplish reports related to radiation and laser safety.
Assist in conducting safety inspections to other research laboratories and satellite accumulation areas.
Monitors and validates completion dates and corrective action.
Oversee and maintain all safety posting and labeling under Radiation Safety Program.
Maintain inventories and database information relating to Radiation, Laser, X-ray Safety and other related program areas.
Perform classification, collection, transportation, storage, and documentation of radioactive waste; and of chemical and biological waste, if needed.
Maintain waste storage facility and spill response equipment.
Perform survey/sampling activities for potentially contaminated areas.
Assist in responding to investigation, and follow-up on accidents and incidents.
Maintain proper documentation of quarterly and annual employee dosages.
Exchange quarterly dosimeter badges.
Monitor calibration and maintenance of radiation detection, instrumentation, and Liquid Scintillation Counter.
Assist in providing safety trainings and technical guidance to the University Community.
Assists with other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

What You’ll Get to Do:
Perform System Safety Engineering tasks and analysis, applying technical knowledge to ensure compliance of system safety requirements as part of Design verification (risk analyses, hazard analyses, software system safety analyses)

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in ESOH Management or Systems Safety Engineering or equivalent degree
A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in systems safety management preferably working in the maritime industry and/or in ship construction
Experience with technical documentation development and review (eg. detailed specifications, engineering drawings, test procedures), identification of safety critical items/functions, and hazard/risk assessment techniques
Knowledge of MIL-STD-882E and the tasks outlined in the most recent standard
Ability to work alone on individual projects with supervision and collaborate with multidisciplinary program/project team members
Proficient in Microsoft 365 Enterprise suite of applications including Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Excel.

What will I be doing?
As a Design Manager, you will work on multiple live projects all based in the Midlands & Yorkshire regions. You will be visiting sites on a weekly basis to ensure everything is going to plan according to the programme. You will also work with the Pre-Construction team to win projects and grow the company.
